ST. GEORGE — Region 9 softball teams haven’t really competed with the northern Utah power squads for quite some time. But it seems the gap is closing.
Dixie’s softball team gave a valiant effort against one the 3A softball powerhouses in Tooele Saturday in one of the final games of the SUNROC Invitational at DHS and Dixie State. But the Lady Buffs were just too much in a 13-9 affair.
Earlier in the day, Dixie dropped a game to Oak Christian out of California.
Against Tooele, Dixie led 5-2 before getting shelled for 11 runs in the fifth inning. The Flyers comeback attempt ended a few runs short despite a couple of late-inning rallies.
Dixie, 4-3, got a two-run double from Summer Simkins and Aubri Challis and Stacia Gelter also made plays for DHS, which begins region play Friday with a home game vs. Cedar.
Cedar 18, Juan Diego 8 Cedar 12, Hunter 10
After starting the season 1-3, the Lady Reds have now won three straight.
They opened Saturday with a 10-run mercy killing of Juan Diego, then beat 5A Hunter despite committing five errors. Cedar is averaging 8.8 run per game this preseason.
The Lady Reds host Pine View Tuesday, then are at Dixie Friday. Both games are scheduled for 4 p.m.
No other scores were reported.
