ST. GEORGE — It was not a memorable year last spring at Snow Canyon, with the baseball missing the playoffs and the softball team getting 10-runned out of the state tournament by Juab. But if the opening set of games are any indication, it could be a banner year for the Warriors and Lady Warriors alike in 2015.

Snow Canyon’s baseball squad took two games Friday and improved to 6-0 on the young season, while the SC softballers also won two Friday, moving their record to 3-0 under new coach Tracee Heaton.

The Dixie Flyers baseball team opened the Dixie Sunshine Classic with a win over Mountain View, Cedar baseball split a pair of games, Canyon View was swept in a Las Vegas tournament and Hurricane also dropped a couple of non-league games.

In softball, the Lady Flyers joined Snow Canyon in sweeping a pair of games Friday, Cedar split a pair of games and Pine View lost two. Desert Hills also dropped game in softball.

In non-region boys soccer action Friday, Snow Canyon got a win, Hurricane earned a draw and Desert Hills took a close loss.

Here’s a roundup of the day’s action:

BASEBALL

It was a pretty good day on the mound and defensively for the Warriors, who allowed just six hits and committed just two errors in 14 innings of action.

“We didn’t swing it at all in the first game, but the pitching was solid,” Snow Canyon coach Reed Secrist said. “There’s no doubt about it starting (6-0) gives these guys some confidence. We just need to keep getting better. I keep telling them that it’s a long grind. Now, when you’re 3-0 in the state tournament, that’s a good thing.”

Against the Bulldogs, SC got early RBIs from Brady Sargent and Brad Grisenti and led 3-0 after just two innings. As it turns out, that would just about all the offense the Warriors would have the rest of the game.

Judge pulled to within 3-1 on an RBI single by Sean Robinson in the third inning. The defenses and pitching would own the final four innings. Jake Sargent pitched a light day, going four innings and allowing three hits. Austin Deming came in and pitched a solid three innings, allowing no hits and no walks. He earned the save for his efforts.

Against West, SC jumped out 1-0 in the bottom of the first Nick Dolce singled and came around to score on an error. The Panthers tied the game at 1-1 in the third on an RBI single by John Takenaka, but SC would respond in the bottom half of that inning with four runs. The Warriors added three more insurance runs in the sixth to take the easy win.

Grisenti and Brady Sargent had three hits in the two games, while Sargent and Dolce had two RBIs each.

Dixie Sunshine Classic

Yep, the Flyers scored 30 runs in two games Friday in the Sunshine Classic, setting them up for a shot at the classic title game Saturday at 7 p.m.

In the early game, Dixie grabbed its fourth win of the season by outlasting the 4A Bruins. With the 20 runs in the later game, the Flyers have now scored 66 runs in six games, averaging 11 runs per outing. Dixie has scored at least 10 runs in four of its six contests.

Drew Bailey was one of the many stars against the Leopards. He was nearly perfect on the mound and struck out nine. Colin Hutchings doubled in the three-run first and homered in an eight-run second for the Flyers, who are 5-1 overall.

Dixie plays Wasatch at 1 p.m. Saturday and will play in the tourney title game Saturday night at 7 p.m. with a win against the Wasps.

DH Invitational
Cedar 7, Logan 1
Northridge 6, Cedar 5 (F/8)

Brecken Lewis continued to pitch well, shutting down the Grizzlies in the early game. The Knights rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the later game.

Against Logan, Lewis’s teammates staked him to an early lead, striking for three runs in the first inning and three more in the third. Lewis never looked back, winning his fourth game of the season. Johnny Jenkins homered for the Redmen.

In the later game, Northridge and Cedar staged a barnburner, with the two teams combining for 11 runs and 20 hits. Rykker Tom homered for Cedar, but it was a two-run double by Brody Browning in the eighth for Northridge that won the contest.

Cedar, 6-1 on the year, plays at 9 a.m. Saturday against Carbon.

Bishop Gorman Tourney
Bishop Gorman 11, Canyon View 0
Basic 10, Canyon View 0

It was a disastrous trip to Las Vegas for the Falcons, who were mercy-ruled twice in a row. Neither game made it past the fifth inning as the Falcons fell to 2-5 on the season.

Canyon View will try to improve its fortunes Saturday with a 9 a.m. game against Desert Oasis and a 1 p.m. game vs. El Dorado.

SOFTBALL

Snow Canyon 12, Bountiful 6
Snow Canyon 18, Lone Peak 3

The Lady Warriors went to 3-0 with the pair of Friday wins at their invitational tourney. Shelbee Hutchings, Mada Mooring and Sonya Hardy all homered as Snow Canyon rocked the softball around the yard.

The Warriors also got solid pitching from Heather Prestwich. Snow Canyon will play Wasatch at 11:15 a.m. and Delta at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Warriors Field.

SUNROC Invitational
Dixie 3, Manti 2
Dixie 9, Union 1

Kylee Mills doubled and also pitched DHS to the win Friday against the Templars. In the game vs. the Cougars, Summer Simkins gave up a run in the second inning and trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth. But Dixie struck for one in the fourth, three in the fifth and five in the sixth to clinch the win. Simkins homered in the game and Airin Lara doubled and tripled.

Dixie, 4-1, faces Oak Christian (Calif.) at 10:30 a.m. and Tooele at 4:30 on the second day of the tourney.

In other softball action, Cedar beat Roy 2-1, then lost to Clearfield 15-9. Pine View had a rough day, dropping an 11-4 game to Bountiful and a 15-0 contest to Syracuse. Desert Hills got mercy-ruled 16-2 at the hands of 5A Davis. Canyon View dropped a 4-0 decision to Bear River.

There is a full slate of tournament games Saturday and region 9 play begins Tuesday afternoon.

SOCCER

Snow Canyon 2, Hunter 1

Jonathon Tuscano and Parker Jenkins each scored for the Warriors, who are now an impressive 6-0-0 on the season and have allowed just one goal.

Tuscano broke the 1-1 tie with about five minutes left in the game. SC is at Box Elder Saturday at 11 a.m.

Hurricane 1, Fremont 1 (F)

The Tigers are 2-1-1 after the tie with the 5A school from North Salt Lake. Kyson Spendlove had the lone goal for Hurricane, which hosts Lone Peak at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Hunter 1, Desert Hills 0

Nathan Gray had the only goal of the game with about 12 minutes left on a header off a corner kick. The Thunder fell to 3-3-0 with the loss. DH hosts Skyline at 11 a.m. Saturday.
