MOHAVE COUNTY, Arizona — The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of an ongoing telephone scam after a Kingman, Arizona, resident reported receiving a telephone call from a person from the IRS.
The purported IRS representative informed the resident that he or she had an arrest warrant and that the warrant must be paid “today” otherwise Sheriff Jim McCabe would be at their residence to arrest them, according to a press statement issued by the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office.
“The (purported) IRS representative strongly urges the person to pay over the phone with a credit card,” according to the statement. In this case the person hung up on the scammer.
“The IRS and the Sheriff’s Office do not conduct business by calling people with outstanding warrants.”
Mohave County Sheriff’s Office further stated that the Sheriff’s Office would like to remind people to not give personal information over the phone or the Internet as scammers tend to fish for personal information to gain access into financial accounts.
“Also, be cautious about scammers urging people to purchase green dot cards,” according to the statement. “This is another method scammers utilize to deceive you and get your money.”
