ST. GEORGE — An Ivins man was arrested early Monday on charges of driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, and improper lane travel after driving recklessly on Snow Canyon Parkway Sunday night.
At 11:30 p.m. Sunday, the St. George Communication Center received reports that the driver of a red van, later identified by police officers as Roy Mark Sawyer, 37, was traveling east near 1300 West on Snow Canyon Parkway, when he struck a sign, crossed the center line and continued east in the westbound traffic lanes, almost hitting an oncoming vehicle.
Sawyer changed direction and continued driving west in the westbound lanes toward Ivins. Santa Clara-Ivins Police officers apprehended Sawyer near the roundabout by Split Rock Drive after seeing him hit a curb, Santa Clara-Ivins Public Information Officer Chat Holt said.
“After reports were received on the vehicle, (officer Cody) O’Bray found and followed it, saw it cross the double yellow line and hit a curb, which gave him the ability to make a traffic stop and arrest him,” Holt said.
Sawyer performed and failed a field sobriety test, had blood drawn and was booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility at 1:36 a.m. Monday, Holt said.
Sawyer was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence, both class B misdemeanors; and driving on suspended or revoked registration and improper lane travel, both class C misdemeanors. Bail is set at $1,990, according to booking information.
Sawyer was identified by police officers as impaired, Holt said, but they were able to determine that the impairment was not due to alcohol. The blood draw will later identify what caused the impairment, Holt said.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
