Car goes up in flames at Sun Valley Condos

ST. GEORGE — A red Pontiac ignited Saturday afternoon at the Sun Valley Condominiums in St. George and became engulfed in flames.

Just before 5 p.m., the St. George Communications Center received a report of a possible vehicle fire at the Sun Valley Condominiums, located at 462 W. 300 North in St. George. The St. George Fire and St. George Police departments responded to the scene to find the car fully engulfed in flames, St. George Firefighter Doug Jansen said.

“I saw the flames, burning pieces coming out from the bottom of the car and hitting the ground,” Marnie Abrahamson, of St. George, said. “That’s when I thought it was going to go. Because you could see whatever fluid was coming out of the bottom of it. I was waiting for it to blow.”

Abrahamson was inside her home when the car started smoking.

“It got kind of freaky there for a minute,” Abrahamson said. “We were waiting for it to blow up. We were all moving backward.”

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the car may have shown signs of igniting just minutes before the driver parked the car and walked into his house.

“The driver stated that when he drove the car, about five minutes prior to the fire, that it was leaking a little bit of oil and smoking,” Jansen said. “He didn’t think anything of it and went in the house.”

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about five minutes, Jansen said.

“They usually go out pretty quick once you get water on them,” he said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by responders on scene and may not contain the full scope of findings.
