ST. GEORGE – St. George Races will kick off the 2015 racing year on Saturday with Southern Utah’s longest running half marathon. The St. George Half Marathon, 5K and Move It! Kids Run, which debuted in 1982 as the Painter’s Half Marathon, expects to see over 2,000 runners participating for its 33rd year, according to race organizers.
Race weekend officially begins on Friday with the race expo sponsored by Altra Zero Drop Footwear to be held Friday from noon to 9 p.m. at the Dixie Convention Center, 1835 South Convention Center Drive. The expo will feature food, apparel and other vendors in the health and fitness industry, as well as packet pick-up and late registration for the half marathon, 5K and kids run.
The half marathon will start at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Dixie Convention Center and will follow a looped course on parts of the city trail system, Anilee Bundy, race specialist for St. George Races, said. The 5K will start at 9:15 a.m.
While there will be no road closures for this race, there will be lane closures on Riverside Drive, River Road and Brigham Road, Bundy said. Those traveling on these roads may encounter delays.
The St. George Half Marathon is the only running race in the state of Utah held in January, Bundy said and added, the weather should be great for racing.
“Oftentimes this race has colder weather,” Bundy said. “The weather should be perfect this weekend.”
Online registration for the St. George Half Marathon and 5K has ended but racers can still register at the expo for an additional fee of $20. Late registrants are not guaranteed a shirt, Bundy said.
“We are really excited for this one,” Bundy said, “it is fun to kick off the year with a half marathon.”
