Dixie High's Blaine Monkres has accepted the job as offensive coordinator at Dixie State University.

ST. GEORGE – Blaine Monkres, whose offenses at Dixie High have put up video game-like numbers the past few years, will try and work his magic as the new offensive coordinator at Dixie State University.

Monkres brings over 30 years of coaching experience to the Red Storm. His experience will help to develop Dixie State’s current offensive staff.

“Blaine is going to do an incredible job leading and mentoring our offense and staff for years to come,” head coach Scott Brumfield said. “His experience as a play-caller and as a head coach will help get our program where it needs to be. His knowledge of football in the state is a huge recruiting edge for us and will help us find the right players.”

He has been the head coach at three different Utah High Schools, an athletic director and teacher. Monkres has a wealth of experience play-calling, game-planning, film work and game preparation.

Last season, the Flyers scored 542 points in 14 games, averaging a whopping 38.7 points a game. In the 3AA quarterfinals, Dixie rallied from down 28 to Stansbury to score 35 points in the second half in the team’s 49-42 victory. Dixie 34.5 per game in 2013 and 36.0 in 2012.

“I am excited for the opportunity to coach at Dixie State University and work with Coach Brumfield,” Monkres said. “I am looking forward to meeting the players that are already at Dixie State and recruiting future players and  get them excited about  the great things Dixie State has to offer. I’m grateful the opportunity that I have had to coach at Dixie High School. I have had the opportunity to coach some good kids, be surrounded by great coaches, a very supportive school, administration and parents. I am sad to be leaving, but looking forward to the new opportunity at Dixie State.”

Fresh off his second state championship at Dixie High School, Monkres brings a pedigree of success from his high school coaching days. Along with the state title in 2014, Monkres also led the Flyers to another title in 2012. His Dixie teams won Region 9 in 2013 and 2010 as well, making the state semifinals both years. He’s coached at Dixie since 2008.

Monkres’ offensive style is similar to Oregon at the college level, with many complex spread offense sets and the emphasis on good quarterback play. Both championships at Dixie were with senior quarterbacks at the helm who excelled at passing with minimal mistakes and running from the read-option. Blake Barney, Dixie’s QB in 2012, is currently serving an LDS Mission and has a scholarship waiting for him at Weber State when he returns.

Monkres, who left Fremont to take the Dixie job in 2008, has gone 54-27 in seven seasons with the Flyers. Overall, Monkres is 187-95 in 25 years as a high school head coach, including a 31-18 playoff record in 21 postseason appearances.

Prior to Dixie, Monkres was the head coach at Fremont High School from 1994-2008, bringing home three Region 1 championships in 2002, 2005 and 2006. He took the Silver Wolves to the state semifinals five times and finished as runner-up to the state title in 1995.

Monkres also served as the school’s athletic director.

His team at Morgan High School won the state title in 1993 and region championships three times from 1990-94.

Monkres worked as an assistant coach and teacher at both Roy High School (1986-90) and Roy Jr. High School (1983-86) before heading to Morgan.

He has a master’s degree in education from Utah State and a bachelor’s from Weber State in physical education.

Monkres and his wife Kim have two sons (Matt and Derek) and two daughters (Mindy and Kylee).
