ST. GEORGE – A motorist failing to yield to oncoming traffic led to a collision on Dixie Downs Road Tuesday night.

At 5:54 p.m., the St. George Communications Center received a report of a collision at 910 N. Dixie Downs Road in front of Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches. The driver of a silver Pontiac G6 had pulled out of the Lin’s Marketplace parking lot and, while attempting to make a left turn, collided with a silver Toyota Scion that was traveling southbound on Dixie Downs Road, St. George Police Sgt. Joseph Hartman said.

While minor injuries were claimed by a passenger in the Pontiac, no one was attended by medical responders or transported to the hospital as a result of the accident, Hartman said. Both cars were towed from the scene with heavy front-end damage.

The St. George Police Department, St. George Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene. Traffic was slowed during the cleanup of the accident.

The driver of the Pontiac was cited for failure to yield on a left turn, Hartman said.

Hartman advises drivers to be cautious when making left turns, especially during times of day when the traffic is heavy.

“A lot of times when drivers are making a left turn, more than a right turn, they don’t see the southbound traffic,” Hartman said. “You need to make sure both directions are clear before you go, especially with heavy traffic.”

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
