HURRICANE – Crystal Drake was arrested Wednesday by Hurricane Police on several charges including possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence, and receiving stolen property, after a tip from the Washington County Drug Task Force that her vehicle had stolen plates.
Hurricane Officer Kacen Gubler was sitting stationary at 2300 West State Street in Hurricane when he observed Drake driving the vehicle with the stolen plates, according to the probable cause statement filed in connection with the arrest. After confirming with dispatch that the plates were stolen, Gubler stopped the car.
Drake admitted to never obtaining a driver’s license, Gubler said in his probable cause statement, and that there was no insurance on the vehicle. Drake told Gubler that she had just purchased the vehicle from a dealership in St. George.
Drake admitted that she had been in Salt Lake a few days before and Gubler noted that the plate was stolen from Salt Lake around the same time. With the temporary tag being expired and there being no insurance on the vehicle, Gubler arrested Drake.
After her arrest, and being advised of her rights, Drake said that she had a syringe with methamphetamine in her purse.
According to the statement, Gubler preformed field sobriety tests and confirmed that Drake was under the influence of some type of controlled substance.
Further investigation revealed that the decal on the stolen license plate was itself stolen and not the original belonging to the plate, and that Drake had a prior conviction for no insurance.
Drake was then transported to the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility and charged with possession of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony; two counts of altering a motor vehicle license plate, third-degree felonies; two counts of receiving stolen property, class B misdemeanors; possession of paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor; driving with no insurance a second offense, a class B misdemeanor; driving with a measurable amount of a control substance, a class B misdemeanor; driver’s license suspended, a class C misdemeanor; failure to obtain registration, a class C misdemeanor; license plate violation front and rear, a class C misdemeanor; and registration not in the vehicle, a class C misdemeanor.
At the time of this report, according to the Washington County booking information, Drake is still in custody with $19,660 bail set.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
