SOCCER

ST. GEORGE — The Desert Hills defense shut down Snow Canyon Thursday night with Kaley Brooksby picking up the shutout in a 2-0 upset at Thunder Stadium.

SC, coming into the game in first place in Region 9 and averaging better than two goals a game, couldn’t find the back of the net and had no answer for the DH defense and Brooksby.

Abby Guymon and Brittany Terry each scored as the Thunder all but clinched a playoff spot with the win. With four games left, the fourth place Thunder (5-3-0 in region) have a nine-point lead on fifth place Pine View and a 12-point lead on sixth-place Hurricane. The Desert Hills and Pine View meet at PV next Tuesday night.

The Warriors, 7-2-0 in region, are tied for first in points with Dixie and Cedar, but Snow Canyon has one less game remaining than those other two teams. SC plays at Dixie Tuesday.

Dixie edged rival Pine View 2-1 Thursday night with Starlee Woodbury cashing in twice for the Flyers. Taylor Whitson was solid in goal for Dixie, which improved to 7-1-0 in region with the victory. Eliza Stirling scored PV’s goal. The Panthers, 2-6-0 in region, still have a good shot at the playoffs as Region 9 gets five playoff spots this season.

Cedar blew out Canyon View 7-1 and is tied with Dixie and Snow Canyon with 21 points. Nicole Jenkins had three goals and Ashley Jenkins had two to lead the Lady Reds.
