IVINS — Ivins City announced that a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place Friday to celebrate the completion of the Fire Station Phase 2 Solar Project. The ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Ivins City Fire Department building, 90 W. Center St. in Ivins.
The Ivins Fire Station Phase 2 Solar project has consisted of installing 52 solar panels on the fire station building, which added to the existing 12 panels that were installed in 2011. This has increased the power production capacity on the fire station by 13.8 kW — taking it from 2.8 kW to 16.6 kW.
The project was funded with a $48,000 grant from the Rocky Mountain Power Blue Sky Program, and the panels were installed by Intermountain Wind and Solar.
Ivins City has been installing solar systems on public buildings with grants from the federal government and Rocky Mountain Power since 2010. Including this project, Ivins City has installed 72.8 kW of solar production capacity, which produces approximately 110,000 kW hours annually — representing 40 percent of the power consumption by city facilities.
Ivins City is supportive of the Rocky Mountain Power Blue Sky program, according to a press release from Ivins City; many Ivins residents participate in the program, and the city itself is a contributing member. Ivins City has been designated as a Blue Sky community by Rocky Mountain Power for its support of renewable energy.
Following Friday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Mayor’s History Walk will take place, starting at the fire station, as part of Ivins Heritage Days.
