ST. GEORGE – St. George Police arrested Arin Hoagland, 18, of St. George, Thursday night for felony charges of rioting causing serious bodily injury and aggravated child abuse. The charges stem from an argument that occurred on Facebook with a 15-year-old female that escalated into a fight at a local park involving several people.
“We responded to a call yesterday evening of a disorderly,” St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said. “We were informed that a fight was taking place at the Royal Oaks Park on 1400 West.”
Several officers responded to the area. When they arrived, officers encountered a group of about 13 people. One of those people, who was actively involved in a physical altercation, was Hoagland.
“Hoagland had gotten into an argument online, via Facebook, with a 15-year-old female,” Despain said. “The two agreed to meet at the park to settle their differences.”
Despain said when the two met at the park, the physical altercation ensued.
“Hoagland actually caused some injuries to the 15-year-old,” Despain said. “So the riot charge stems from agreeing to meet at a certain area to cause disorder by the fight they got in. The child abuse charges stem from the fact that the person she got into a fight with was a juvenile.”
Despain said the juvenile was referred to the juvenile court for her part in the incident before being released to the custody of her parents.
Others involved in the incident were issued citations for the part they played in the events.
Hoagland was arrested and booked into Washington County’s Purgatory Correctional Facility on one third-degree felony riot charge and one third-degree felony aggravated reckless child abuse charge.
Hoagland’s bail was set at $10,000. According to information from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, she has posted bond and been released from custody.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
