MOCCASIN, Arizona – The annual Sounds of Thunder Mountain Powwow returns to the Kaibab Paiute Reservation near Moccasin, Arizona, Saturday and Sunday. The public is invited to experience a weekend of Native American dancing, drumming and other festivities.

“The public is invited to come out and experience some Southern Paiute activities and northern plains powwow style of competition,” said Charley Bulletts, lead coordinator of activities for the powwow.

Native American dancers from as far away Oklahoma and New Mexico will be in attendance at the powwow competing for prize money, Bulletts said.

Admission to the powwow is free, and all are invited to attend. In addition to competitive Native American dancing there will be games, a free fishing derby, a fun walk/run, Southern Paiute hand drum contest, kids’ activities, a horseshoe tournament and a Southern Paiute art show. The traditional free community feast will take place Saturday evening at the tribe community building and is open to all.

“We feed everybody – all shapes and sizes,” Bulletts said.

Attendees are welcome to bring their own canopies or umbrellas, along with chairs and blankets to sit on during the powwow, Bulletts said. There will also be metal shade canopies provided by the tribe. The main powwow events will take place outdoors, and grass seating will primarily be available.

“There will be arts and crafts vendors and food booths available,” Bulletts said.

The powwow events take place in and around the Kaibab Paiute Tribe park and community building, near Moccasin. The Kaibab Paiute Reservation is located about 14 miles west of Fredonia, Arizona. To reach the powwow grounds, turn at the junction of state Route 389A and Pipe Springs Road and travel to the very end of Pipe Springs Road, about 2 miles past Pipe Spring National Monument.

The new Kaibab Paiute Tribe campground will be open for use during the powwow. Those desiring to camp there should call Lorraine Benn at 928-643-8321. Bulletts said there will also be free camping at the baseball field near the powwow grounds on Saturday night.

The Kaibab Paiute is NOT located in Moccasin, Az. But on The Kaibab Paiute Reserve. On 389 hwy on The Arizona Strip at The junction of Pipe Springs Natl. Monument .
Moccasin is a small Mormon community and is NOT connected with the Kaibab Paiute People in anyway. Please print correct information before printing articles concerning The Paiute People….

We’ve consulted with someone employed by the Kaibab Paiute Tribe, and he agreed that a distinction should be made that the community building and park are on the Kaibab Paiute Reservation NEAR Moccasin. We will make that correction.
