LEEDS – Law enforcement and emergency responders were dispatched to the area of Silverado Court in Leeds Thursday when the St. George Communications Center received a call at 8:16 p.m. reporting a shooting had occurred.

“A male, armed with a gun, reportedly confronted a neighbor and was shot by the neighbor,” Washington County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Shauna Jones wrote in a statement released at 10:39 p.m. “He was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Detectives are in the process of interviewing witnesses to determine the circumstances that led up to the shooting.  The shooter is on scene and cooperating with the investigation, Jones said in an email to St. George News at 11:20 p.m.

The area has been contained by first responders including the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, with a barricade set up to block off Silverado Court.  By about 8:45 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies on scene said the situation was under control and there was no threat to the public at that time.

Life Flight medical helicopter was initially dispatched but later canceled. Leeds Area Ambulance arrived on scene, as well, but left empty.

Deputy Washington County Attorney Ryan Shaum was on scene to assist Washington County Sheriff’s detectives with the investigation.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information available from authorities on scene and does not include the full scope of findings. Refresh this page periodically, as updates will be added as particulars are confirmed.

St. George News Editor-in-Chief Joyce Kuzmanic and Assistant to the Editor Cami Cox Jim contributed to this report.

it’s cute how they think they’re living in the 1800’s wild west…

  • Gun Toting Retards July 17, 2014 at 11:46 pm

Wooohoooo!!!!!!! Where is my gun? I wanna shoot somebody. }}}}}}}}} I dare say, we have a problem here in Southern Utah, as well as the rest of the country. I am sure the nutjobs will follow up with some good gun comments. F ing retards.

    • Char July 18, 2014 at 12:28 am

      give it a break.

      • U July 18, 2014 at 12:49 am

Seriously. Narrow minded comments with your asinine liberal views before any details are put out is a bit much. Not only that buy I’m guessing there’s a lot of folks offended by your use of the R word. Way to stay classy. Bet you jump all over people for using the N word though because that’s how you hypocrite liberals roll. When someone breaks in your house and rapes your …. Well, I would say wife but you’re probably divorced or never married. Dog maybe? Anyway, if someone rapes your Pomeranian, feel free to throw your Obama phone at them because your gun toting neighbors won’t be coming to your aid.

        • my opinion is simply that July 18, 2014 at 7:12 am

Great come back. That’s awesome ha ha ha, and probably true. 🙂

        • chopsticks July 18, 2014 at 12:08 pm

U are certainly no better than the previous poster with skewed ideas on those dastardly guns. It is conservatives like you that show your true colors all to often and create impotency in your own party. How about a little bit of intelligence in a response instead of insipid name calling.

          • Anon July 18, 2014 at 12:34 pm

Hmm, who was doing the name calling?

        • utarded July 18, 2014 at 12:13 pm

          Thanks for proving my point.

    • DaveB July 18, 2014 at 2:01 pm

The man was 90 years old and very likely to have been senile and should not have been in possession of firearms. A far cry from the majority of gun owners in St. Utah

  • Bo July 18, 2014 at 5:58 am

We should probably wait for more info before making silly comments.
Was this neighbor constantly harassing the other neighbor and finally felt it was necessary to defend themselves?
Has the deceased neighbor been a threat and this was the last straw?
Or…. who knows what caused this incident.
When more facts come out, that would be a good time to make intelligent comments as to what actually took place in that circle.

    • Henry July 20, 2014 at 11:13 am

Given other reports, I’m starting to suspect that he simply heard or saw strangers in his next door neighbor’s driveway, went to check it out, and was shot during the process. Tragic.

  • Jon R. Cocktoasten July 18, 2014 at 7:13 am

Wow! A man is dead there are least two families devastated by this incident and there are people out there who will say “it’s cute” and “Wooohoooo!!!!!!! Where is my gun? I wanna shoot somebody. ” I won’t even get into the whole pro/anti gun thing, but really is that what this is about? I’m sure if someone you loved was involved in this incident, you wouldn’t appreciate the comments. Let’s wait for the facts, then make our comments. By the way, I am not related to nor do I know the people involved…

  • Mareesha July 18, 2014 at 7:42 am

Does anyone have a link to a map that shows where silverado circle is located?

  • JW July 18, 2014 at 8:47 am

Sick of all these liberals from California moving here. Wait for more info to come out before you make stupid comments. BTW this is the west people will protect themselves. This is not NYC. Go move there if you want.

  • martinbonesaw July 18, 2014 at 8:50 am

to be honest, i hope there are restrictions on guns.
and to all the people that think differently? this could be you next.
seriously there is a gun problem folks, seriously. and i don’t care if every gun in the world gets taken from us.
NWO? World Population Control? suuuure…i don’t really care as long as it increases my chances of living. this day and age, guns are risking my life every time i step outside.
i said this in a recent post that after the bundy ranch thing violence will hit Southern Utah hard. oh, and look what has happened.
good grief folks. seriously guns are a major problem. not just the people.

  • JOSH DALTON July 18, 2014 at 9:09 am

That’s quit a few shootings in the past few months. What is going on here! I blame the weather. Its to hot! People are already irritable so when they get upset it escalates to producing a firearm. why are all of the shooting happening on the outskirts of town? Maybe its the lack of police presence. See the real problem is never in the ghetto i.e Dixie Downs.

  • Kev July 18, 2014 at 9:14 am

Lots of gangstas in Leeds. I assume this was a drive by?

  • EL JEFE July 18, 2014 at 9:30 am

Two individuals armed with guns face off and one ends up deceased. Well at least it wasn’t one individual armed with a baseball bat and the other armed with a gun.
Seems like the best shooter won. Remember….practice, practice and then practice some more. People are stressed out these days and we’ll probably be seeing more of this type of conflict resolution in the near future. Sad.

  • lp July 18, 2014 at 9:41 am

uummm….nobody in Leeds behaves any different than any other town. I take that back Bob, nobody acts like you. Last time I checked it was St.George that has most the shootings. Yippe Ki Yi Yay …………..

  • AS July 18, 2014 at 9:49 am

When will we know who died? This is devastating, I’ve never heard of anything like this happening in our little town. It’s a little scary too. I send my prayers out to both of the families involved. I hope they cope with this well. I can’t believe some of the stupid comments some of you have left, RESPECT these families. I’m with Jon R. Cocktoasten on this one that you wouldn’t appreciate the comments if it was one of your love-ones. Watch what you say an where you post it.

  • Really? July 18, 2014 at 10:11 am

    Amen cocktoasten

  • bubbetta July 18, 2014 at 10:40 am

Whoa, lots of angry people making some pretty nasty comments this morning. What we should be doing is hugging those we love and doing nice things for our community instead of hurling nasty remarks to people we don’t even know. The loved ones of these two individuals are absolutely devastated today; have a moment of silence or say a prayer for them, you’ll feel better.

  • JAR July 18, 2014 at 10:44 am

    Editor,
Speaking about news updates, Is Rommney on top of this sad occurrence?
Any response/ statement from the Sheriff’s office and/or County attorney office this morning yet?
I’m sure Mr. ‘Wooohooo’ retard is halfway sober by now this morning and watching ‘Road Runner cartoons and waving his Harry Reid for President flag.

    • Joyce Kuzmanic Joyce Kuzmanic July 18, 2014 at 12:22 pm

Now JAR, you have to know we’re full intent on this. 🙂 I trust you saw our last update last night?
I’m afraid I don’t know who Mr. ‘Wooohooo’ retard is. 🙁
We will publish a new report when we have something for you.
      Nice visiting with you,

This man was 90 years old and quite probably suffering from dementia or other age related Kent disorder. A far cry from the average gun owner in So. Utah!
