ST. GEORGE – A St. George woman arrested Monday on charges of drug possession and endangering a newborn child, made her first appearance before Judge Eric Ludlow Thursday in 5th District Court in St. George.

The St. George Police Department received a call Monday from Dixie Regional Medical Center that a newborn baby belonging to Christine May Klunk, 33, of St. George, had tested positive for amphetamines and methamphetamines.

After cutting the infant’s umbilical cord, hospital staff took blood from the portion of the cord attached to the baby and tested it, according to a probable cause statement filed by SGPD Officer Jeremy Needles in connection with the arrest. The results of the test showed the baby had amphetamines and methamphetamines in its system. Needles was provided with a copy of the test results by hospital staff.

A social worker told Needles that the baby, born July 1, was delivered at the 29-week mark and was significantly underweight for its age, according to the statement. The social worker also told Needles the infant had been admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit and would need to remain there for a few more months.

Tuesday, Needles located Klunk at her home and asked her to accompany him to the police station. Klunk agreed to speak with Needles about the incident and admitted to using methamphetamine throughout her pregnancy, including once within a week of the baby’s birth, according to the statement.

Klunk was arrested and booked into Washington County’s Purgatory Correctional Facility on one charge of third-degree felony drug possession and one charge of second-degree felony child endangerment. Ludlow ordered bail set at $15,000, cash or bond and declared Klunk indigent, appointing St. George Attorney Douglas D. Terry as her defense counsel. Klunk’s first roll call appearance is set for Monday afternoon.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

So what this sick world is telling moms on meth kill your child through abortion first otherwise we send you to jail once you have the baby and then take your baby away from you? Like thats going to help. Im so confused at the double standards.

  • AdoptiveMom July 10, 2014 at 2:17 pm

She will get a rehab sentence and welfare. The baby will have a lifetime of health issues but she won’t be paying for it. The system will remove him/her from the mom’s responsibility, financially too. That will be the deal she signs in order to guarantee relinquishment. So, she gets a new life, and will probably go on to have more kids. The baby gets a life sentence. Vacant eyed drug addicts do not deserve the opportunity to ‘make another mistake’ when the stakes are this high. She should be required to do more than relinquish; as in see her best work and get her uterus yanked. Sorry, no sympathy here.

    • angry aunt July 10, 2014 at 5:36 pm

the baby is gonna b taken care of. It will not be a tax payers burden. Her uncle has the financial means. U don’t know anything about her. Yes she has a drug problem.

      • St. George Resident July 11, 2014 at 11:08 am

Don’t think for one minute that it’s not tied to the fact that this society has a misogyny problem. Why? Well, for starters, look at that big ugly building in Salt Lake City full of condescending old men who preach a religion that treats women (and others) like second class citizens.

        • Rachel July 11, 2014 at 2:08 pm

Seriously, man. You don’t have to troll. Move on.

        • Misty July 11, 2014 at 3:05 pm

Wow, you are good, I don’t think I could have found a way to tie an anti-Mormon comment to this story. Oh wait, maybe you were referring to the state capitol.

          • Jen Lindley July 11, 2014 at 8:49 pm

This is Utah, they are one and the same. Lol.

    • TARRELL July 11, 2014 at 10:03 am

Don’t you worry her attorney Doug terry works for the prosecution she will get the max. That’s what Doug terry does.
Absolutely the biggest fraud of a public defender ever since Alan boyack.

    • Momof three July 11, 2014 at 8:53 pm

I know I will be judged for this, but I couldn’t agree with you more. I am not one for abortion, but in this case she may have done that child a favor. I think that when things like this happen, the state needs to step in and remove the possibility for it to happen again. She is old enough to know better addict or not. You either love your child or you don’t and if you don’t get help (which all honesty aside if she asked someone would have helped her I’m sure family, church, state) She had money for drugs… why not rehab. Too bad its NOT “inhuman” to bring a drug addicted baby into this world, but it is to prevent it from happening again. Why not pull out the baby making parts and donate her eggs to those that WANT children and are responsible. How sad. How selfish.

  • LDSexy July 10, 2014 at 3:34 pm

Put that poor baby in a good stable family, and take that thing that gave birth to the baby out back and just shoot her, why waste taxpayer dollars on her?

  • Katie July 10, 2014 at 3:43 pm

Yeah let’s just take away this baby’s mother and throw her in jail so that the child ends up in the system and grows up with just as many issues and just as f…..* up as her mother.
This girl needs our help, not our condemnation. No mother puts her child at risk unless she is mentally ill, addiction is just the same as mental illness and we should be rehabilitating and rebuilding a sober bond between these two. It’s time we start reaching out our hands instead of pointing our fingers.

    • her friend July 11, 2014 at 12:29 am

Thank u katie! Christine is a very good friend of mine. I live in another state but that’s beside the point. She has a problem and needs help. Everyone is so quick to judge, which solves nothing. Christine comes from good family so that baby will be taken care of. I just hope my friend gets help, she is sick. So before people start pointing the finger and making your ignorant rants, just remember this could be someone u care about, could be your mother, sister aunt cousin friend.

      • St. George Resident July 11, 2014 at 11:10 am

I’m curious. In your view, what is the difference between a “good” family and a “bad” family?

  • My Evil Twin July 10, 2014 at 3:46 pm

Another excellent case for mandatory sterilization, but thanks to those wonder folks at the ACLU, it isn’t going to happen. (ACLU = Assorted Crooks, Losers and Undesirables.)

    • Ron July 11, 2014 at 12:44 pm

So comforting to know that there are people like you willing to play God and make those sorts of decisions for the rest of us. While we’re at it, maybe we should just put you in charge of rounding up people who have messed up their lives and shooting them before they cause more problems for the rest of us God-fearing, moral, upright people–God bless us!

  • Sheryl Vessey July 10, 2014 at 4:12 pm

No, no sympathy, just harsh judgments. Nice to hear you speak, GOD, where ya been lately? For myself, I just say, I personally hope they both get the help they need to fully recover.

  • angry aunt July 10, 2014 at 5:34 pm

I am Christines aunt. Those who made comments do not know the whole story, just what the news published. They failed to state that she had an emergency C section and it was not drug related. So those who make comments that’s ur right, but until u know the whole exact situation. Shut …* up. … The baby is fine breathing on her own.

  • EL JEFE July 10, 2014 at 6:04 pm

This individual (the mother) will get the slap on the hand and lifetime mental counseling and lifetime welfare (either public or “faith based”). Then she will be using her SNAP/EBT card to trade for more drugs and do it all over again. I agree with MY EVIL TWIN and say she should undergo mandatory sterilization as part of her plea agreement. I would gladly chip in an extra amount in taxes for the sterilization.

  • Tom July 10, 2014 at 7:36 pm

Most everything that tax dollars get spent on is waste….get over it and quit whining. You probably say that all druggies belong in prison….that is untrue but if you think it,is tax money spent on the total crock of crap that the penal system is,is that wasting your tax dollars still? Im not being mean,I just want to understand your point of view.

  • Stage Hunter July 10, 2014 at 7:38 pm

Don’t judge, Let’s tell the truth. Father won’t be around. Uncle won’t pay. Tax payers will. No we don’t know her don’t want to. Mother is self centered. Drug abuse isn’t a disease unless being stupid counts. Yes God still loves her. Yes all citizens and child will have to forgive her. And God will even for give her, if she listens to some advice from his Son. Go And Sin No More. Ya that’s the hard part.

    • scatter brain July 10, 2014 at 8:12 pm

I feel sorry for you that you don’t believe her uncle will take care of this baby. You must come from a place where unconditional love is just something people preach. Saddest part is that someday your child will need this kind of love and you will have no idea how to give it. Learn from this.

      • Anger aunt July 30, 2014 at 3:39 am

Thank you. And we r adopting the baby. For all u jerks out there. Ha on u. She will grow up going to private schools, white sandy beaches, and where the palm trees sway. Get healthy and nicely tanned. Now can u guess where her aunt lives? That’s me

    • Anger aunt July 30, 2014 at 3:33 am

I haas to reply to ur remark “uncle won’t pay” how do u know? Why just bc her aunt said? The baby won’t be a burden of tax payers in Utah so just shut ***. She’ll (baby) will be living in a state only few have the money or means to vacation to bc it is the 2 high cost of living. And yes uncle will pay. Not tax payers or state

  • Mark Vinclio July 10, 2014 at 7:52 pm

Some crimes should have a mandatory death sentence within 1 day of being caught.

    • scatter brain July 10, 2014 at 8:08 pm

Right…because you have never made a mistake.

  • Blessed July 10, 2014 at 8:06 pm

So many wonderful Christian, loving people. I bet all of you show up at church on Sunday and then wait till weekdays to show your true self. Hope you never have a family member who is unfortunate enough to have a problem and then put on display for the rest of the community to judge, But then around here, we pretend to have perfect families. And just so you know…God loves her and her baby just as much as God loves you.

    • ^^^ This Comment July 11, 2014 at 8:19 am

Yes he does. Shame on these folks. It’s sad really, but it is apparant that they have not been affected by Addiction… YET! Now, here is a proven fact for y’all. Addiction will eventually affect you or a family member at some point in your life. When it happens, you will feel helpless, because you will not believe that it is happening to you or someone you love. Long story short, in this game of life their is the woman.. Her name is Karma, she may not come knocking today, but, one day she will be right there in full force to shoot your high horse down. What an amazing woman she is. Teaching the Self-Righteous some humility.

    • St. George Resident July 11, 2014 at 11:16 am

The truth is, their “god” doesn’t love women. He is a misogynist, sexist, racist, murdering pig. Read the bible without ignoring the ugly parts and projecting into it the giant personal Santa Claus you want that god to be. See him for what he truly is. Any god that would condone slavery, or kill the first born of thousands of people just because he was pissed at their parents…please. I could go on. Open your eyes!!

And there’s no such thing as rehab for drug users through the penal system. They all abuse the drug court system and get busted a week later with a needle in their arm. Real rehab is inpatient clinics and is expensive. Even then people don’t win unless they want to. This woman clearly chose drugs over her unborn baby. Probably hoping for a miscarriage. Yet here we are. At least she had the decency to go to the hospital instead of that crack head who had 7 babies and killed all of them and put them in boxes out in the garage. But then again, who’s to say this little one wouldn’t be better off rather than facing a life of mental retardation, birth defects, addiction right out of the womb, and who knows what else.

  • Adopted mama to a FAS baby July 11, 2014 at 9:22 am

I adopted a baby from here born addicted as well. First of all to the people that said, the baby will be just as f’ed up as the mother due to the system…. please get your facts straight. I know many of the foster parents in Wash county and they would all love this baby as their own. But with saying that, if she comes from the good family that other people have been saying and an uncle that is financially stable, the baby will be placed with them IF they want her.
I feel awful for this precious baby who did not choose be be born addicted as well. This baby will struggle more in the first 3 years of life than most children do. Learning, eating, sleeping, mobility, communication will all be a struggle. It is easy to sit back and judge, and see this womas as a selfish woman( which I agree)! But there is a premie who is addicted in NICU that needs help and love.
The sad thing is….. is she can go do this again and not one person has a say. I think she should be on maniditory birth control like an IUD or an implanted device until she test clean for 2 years. I hope this baby comes out of the NICU ok and has loving supportive parents or guardians who are ready for a struggle.

    Entrapment.

    • JOSH DALTON July 11, 2014 at 9:59 am

No after reading the other article and getting shot down because of my ignorance of the law I feel this gal should plead NOT GUILTY! Just like that Cedar City cop. then if everything goes well she will get off with a slap on the wrist. Then my theory will be right!

  • Outtawack July 11, 2014 at 3:51 pm

I’m glad to see some has a uncle that will take care of them. Oh ya his name uncle Sam. Same one all the other drug addicts and lazy people us.ya I have family that’s drug addicts. I put them where they get uncles free money, in the State Pen. Been there 25 years and hope to keep him there so they won’t bother the rest of ya. Ever noticed the the maker doesn’t want them Back to fast either. Helps us to learn tolerance of the weaker human race. Only one way for St. George Res to get healthy start praying

    • Anger Aunt July 30, 2014 at 3:43 am

Her uncle is not “Uncle Sam “. And she will b living in a state u only dream of but can’t afford to live in. Maybe if u save up enough $ for 5-10 years u can vaca for a few days. Bwahhhhhaha
