Red Flag Warning issued for Southern Utah

SOUTHERN UTAH — The National Weather Service has issued a “Red Flag Warning” for much of Washington, Kane and Iron counties for wind and low relative humidity. This is a “critical fire conditions” alert in effect through Sunday evening for wind and low relative humidity.

Affected area

Large portions of Iron, Washington and Kane counties, particularly the Color Country Mountains below 8,000 feet (see map insert).

Winds

Southwest winds 10-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Relative humidity

Relative humidity is expected to be down between 10 and 15 percent.

Impacts 

The combination of gusty winds and low relative humidity will create hazardous fire weather conditions where fuels are critically dry.

Precautionary/ preparedness actions

A “Red Flag Warning” means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly.

A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
