ST. GEORGE — Marinn Whitney kept the Dixie bats just quiet enough and made enough noise with her own bat with two hits as Cedar defeated the Flyers 6-3 Tuesday afternoon at DHS.

Whitney went all seven innings in the circle, allowing three runs and six hits for her Lady Reds. She also slammed a double in the third inning and added an RBI single in the sixth as Cedar never trailed against Dixie.

softbThe win puts the Lady Reds at 9-2 in Region 9, a half-game behind Canyon View with just last-place Hurricane left on the CHS schedule. The Falcons played their last game Tuesday, beating HHS 12-3, and have a bye Friday.

Against the Flyers, Cedar struck out to a 3-0 lead with a big rally in the top of the second. Brecklee Lunt led off with a single and Raegan Urquidez followed suit. After a popout, Sadie Leavitt knocked home the first run of the game with a single. Ashlin Ogden followed with another RBI hit, making it 2-0. After a walk, Lisa Bollinger hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Mikie DeKorver sacrificed home Summer Simkins in the bottom of the second to make it 3-1.

The Lady Reds pushed the lead to 4-1 on an RBI by Bri Brunson in the third, but Dixie responded with two runs of its own. Stacia Gelter and Simkins both knocked in runs in the third to close the gap to 4-3.

Cedar added insurance runs in the fourth (off a Javlyn Weaver RBI) and the sixth off of Whitney’s RBI and that was more than enough for Whitney, who had settled into a groove pitching the ball. She didn’t allow a hit the final three and one third innings to the Flyers.

Dixie, 5-6 in region, is still in position to clinch a playoff spot with a win Friday at Pine View or a loss by Desert Hills Friday at Snow Canyon. The Flyers are currently in fourth place, a game ahead of the Thunder.

The Lady Reds will likely have a coin toss to determine seeding if they can beat Hurricane and end up tied with Canyon View for first place.

Canyon View 12, Hurricane 3

The balls were flying out at CV, with five homers leaving the yard between the two teams.

But it was the Lady Falcons who did the most damage, with Josie Platt finishing her senior year right, striking out 10 Tigers and collecting three hits, including three doubles.

CV plated eight runs in the third inning after falling behind 2-0 to Hurricane. The first-place Falcons couldn’t quite mercy-rule Hurricane, but they did add a pair of runs in the fifth and in the sixth. Canyon View got home runs from Kelsee Hyatt, Jaycee Slack and Cheyanne Anderson.

Hurricane got dingers from Cierra Stratton and Taylor Anderson.

At 10-2 in region, CV has clinched at least a tie for first place and awaits Cedar’s Friday game against Hurricane.

Pine View 8, Desert Hills 5

The Panthers got their third region win with the road victory at DH.

PV improves to 7-12 overall and 3-8 in region and did real damage to any playoff hopes the Thunder have. But the Panthers can do the same to Dixie on Friday with a home game against the Flyers in the season finale.

D-Hills, 9-11 and 4-7, needs a win at Snow Canyon Friday and a Dixie loss to Pine View in order to force a play-in game for the last playoff spot from Region 9.
