ST. GEORGE — Dixie won’t get the region crown in 2014, but the Flyers soccer team came away with some measure of satisfaction by blowing out Canyon View 7-0 Friday night and in the process, earning a home playoff game next Thursday by clinching the region’s No. 2 seed.

soccerHayden Mathews gained his seventh shutout of the season between the posts and Jonathan Acosta and Alex Green each scored twice for Dixie, which finishes the regular season with an 11-3-2 record, 8-3-1 in region. Dixie comes up three points short of Pine View in the race for the region title, but Dixie does finish three points ahead of Snow Canyon and thus will host Thursday’s first round of the playoffs. The Region 11 No. 3 team, most likely Grantsville, will visit Walt Brooks Stadium Thursday at 4 p.m. in the first round.

Against last-place Canyon View, Dixie was clinging to a 2-0 lead at halftime. But that changed in a big hurry after intermission with the goals coming in a cascade. When the dust had cleared, five different Flyers had scored, including the multi-goal games from Green and Acosta, plus single tallies from Brandon Ayon, Fernando Morales and Tyler Bennett.

Green is one of the top scorers in 3A and the two goals were his eighth and ninth of the year. With the shutout, Mathews now leads the classification in shutouts on the season.

Canyon View ends the year 3-12-1 and 1-10-1 in region.

Snow Canyon 3, Cedar 1

The Warriors needed a win to assure a playoff spot and fell behind 1-0 early in the game. But SC rallied behind two goals from Angel Muniz and a score from Branson Stafford to outrun the Redmen.

The victory clinches the third seed for Snow Canyon, which finishes the season 8-6-2 overall and 7-4-1 in region, six points behind region champion Pine View and three back of Dixie, but three ahead of fourth-place Cedar. The Warriors will hit the road in the first round of the playoffs, visiting 6-8-0 Ben Lomond, which finished second in Region 11. The Scots are 5-2-0 in that region and play one more region game Monday at home against Grantsville.

Cedar still qualifies for the playoffs despite the loss. The Redmen, 9-6-1 overall and 6-5-1 in region, finished with 19 points, three ahead of fifth-place Desert Hills. Cedar will travel as the Region 9 fourth seed to take on Region 11 champion Stansbury, which is 11-1-0 overall and was a perfect 8-0-0 in its region. The Stallions average nearly six goals a game.

All first-round games next Thursday are at 4 p.m.

Hurricane 1, Desert Hills 0

The Thunder were hoping to force some kind of play-in game with a win Friday night, but circumstances in the Cedar-Snow Canyon game didn’t go their way and the Tigers didn’t give an inch either.

Hurricane’s JD Stanworth scored the only goal of the game in the first half and Tiger goalkeeper Kaden Jackson got his ninth career shutout as HHS came away with its third region win of the season.

So neither team will be headed to the postseason, with the Thunder unable to defend their region title from last year. Hurricane ends up 6-9-1 overall and 3-9-0 in region while D-Hills finishes 6-8-2 overall and 5-6-1 in region.
