ST. GEORGE – In honor of Good Friday, Christians from various churches met at Bluff Street Park in St. George where the beginning of “The Way of the Cross” took place. Christians observe Good Friday as the day Christ died on the cross at Calvary over 2,000 years ago.

Over 250 people took part in this year’s “Way of the Cross,” where members of the community walked the streets in a prayerful and contemplative setting following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. As community members participated in the pilgrimage, they sang the hymn “Were You There.”

Community members and clergy from the St. George Catholic Church, Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church, Grace Episcopal, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, New Promise Lutheran Church, Good Shepherd Presbyterian, Spirit of the Desert Episcopal, Utah National Guard, Saint Anthony of the Desert Orthodox Church, Solomon’s Porch, New Beginnings Christian Fellowship, and the American Baptist Churches took part in the readings of scripture.

Numerous Stations of the Cross, depicting moments in Christ’s life leading up to his crucifixion, are along the way where people stopped to pray and contemplate the Christian journey.

Since the vast majority of Christians aren’t able to go to Jerusalem, The Way of the Cross has enabled them to engage in a mini-pilgrimage of sorts, whereby they could focus on the key events of Christ’s last day.

The Way of the Cross, also called Via Delorosa of The Stations of the Cross, is a devotion to the passion of Christ consisting of prayer and meditations on 14occurrences experienced by Christ on his way to the crucifixion and burial. The origin of this devotion goes back to the custom of visiting the holy sites in Jerusalem.

Many attendees at the Way of the Cross progression said they were confident that following the journey of Christ to the cross will lead us closer to God’s loving heart.
