ST. GEORGE — Pine View exploded for three second-half goals to pull away for an easy 4-0 win over Canyon View Wednesday night at Panther Stadium and stay ahead of the pack in Region 9 soccer.

soccerJustin Jones got the shutout and four different Panthers pounded home goals, including a second-half header by Michael Cardenas, as Pine View romped.

For Jones, it was the fifth shutout of the season and the 12th of his career. Pine View got goals in the game from Cardenas, Michael Wade, Keith Collins and Braeden Johnston.

The Panthers, with the win, improved to 11-2-2 overall and 8-2-1 in region play, good enough for 25 points. Pine View leads Dixie by six points with one game left for PV, next Tuesday’s home match vs. Cedar.

Pine View needs a win or tie against the Redmen to clinch the region outright and be the top seed heading into the playoffs. If the Panthers were to lose and Dixie wins its final two matches (at Snow Canyon Tuesday and at home vs. Canyon View Friday), the Flyers would be the top seed based on their 1-0-1 record against Pine View.

Snow Canyon 2, Hurricane 1

The Warriors bounced back from a frustrating loss to Pine View by beating Hurricane Wednesday night. SC pulled even with Dixie for second place and still has high hopes of hosting a first-round playoff game and could even tie Pine View for the title if the Panthers lose to Cedar next week and the Warriors win twice. Snow Canyon and Pine View split their two meetings this season.

The Warriors, 7-5-2 overall and 6-3-1 in region play, are just 3-3 in their last six games. They finish with matches at home against Dixie Tuesday and Cedar Friday.

Desert Hills 0, Cedar 0 (F-2OT)

The Thunder needed a win desperately, but had to settle for a tie on the road Wednesday night as neither offense could penetrate the superior defenses.

Kaeland Osborne and Vincent Enfield each recorded shutouts, but the draw favors Cedar as the Redmen remain three points ahead of the Thunder in the race for the final playoff spot.

Cedar, 8-4-1 and 5-3-1, still has three matches remaining and will squeeze those in next week with a visit to Pine View Tuesday, a home game vs. Hurricane Wednesday and a visit to Snow Canyon Friday.

Desert Hills, 5-7-2 and 4-5-1, has lost only one game since mid-March. But the Thunder had a horrible start to region play and may have waited too long to get hot. DH finishes region with a home match vs. Canyon View Tuesday and then a roadie at Hurricane Friday.
