Softball roundup: Whitney pitches, hits Lady Reds to win over PV; STGNews video postgame

ST. GEORGE — Marin Whitney had two RBIs and pitched seven strong innings as Cedar won its third straight game to start the region season Friday afternoon with an 8-2 decision over Pine View.

cedar-smPine-view-sm“We’ve just been hitting the ball really well, especially early in games,” Cedar assistant coach Kerry Larsen said. “It really helps when you jump on teams in the first or second inning and get the lead. It helps with confidence.”

Whitney was in control throughout from the pitching circle, but she also did plenty of damage from the batter’s box. She ripped a two-run double in the first inning before most fans had even unfolded their portable chairs or settled into the aluminum bleachers. Her RBIs in the first, along with a third run on a ground out, put the Lady Reds up 3-0 before Pine View had even batted.

The Lady Panthers made a game of it with a run in the bottom of the third. Jordan Gosik doubled to lead off, then scored on a solid single by Maddie Green.

But that’s as close as it would get. Cedar added three more runs in the top of the fourth on just a single hit. Pine View gave up a walk, an error, a passed ball and two wild pitches in the quick rally, which made it 6-1.

Javlyn Weaver then provided a little icing on the cake for Cedar with a two-run home run over the right-center field fence that made it 8-1. Green singled home a run in the bottom of the seventh for the Panthers to complete the scoring.

Cedar is now 3-0 in region, just ahead of defending champion Snow Canyon. CHS, 5-6 overall, plays Snow Canyon in Iron County Tuesday afternoon.

“We are looking forward to playing them, but we’re taking it one game at a time,” Larsen said.

Pine View, 1-3 in region and 5-6 overall, is off Tuesday and plays at home vs. Desert Hills next Friday.

SC out-hit Dixie 13-3 and led most of the game, but couldn’t put it away, leaving the Flyers just enough wiggle room to steal away the win late. Summer Simkins got the win in the circle with er defense playing error-less behind her. It is SC’s first region loss in two years.

Dixie, 5-7 and 2-1 in region, plays at Canyon View Tuesday. SC, 7-3 and 3-1, plays at Cedar Tuesday afternoon.
