ST. GEORGE — Cedar pulled out two goals on the road Tuesday to top Desert Hills, 2-0. Redmen keeper Kaeland Osborne earned a shutout in the win and said it was a full team effort.

“Without my defense and without my team backing me up today I wouldn’t have had the shut out,” Osborne said. “Without my team this wouldn’t be possible… It was kind of a sloppy win. We are able to play a little more composed than that, but we got the win and that’s all that matters.”

The first goal came in the 37th minute as Redmen senior Brock Shipp connected with a header to the back of the net.

“It was kind of luck,” Shipp said. “It went over both the defender’s heads and bounced right to me. Then the goalie was outside, so I just hit it over his head. That one was lucky.”

Desert Hills quickly strung together some attacks, responded to the goal and tried to keep the ball on their offensive third. Cedar also made some calculated moves, passed the ball through the middle but couldn’t score immediately.

Cedar junior Brett Sillitoe played an integral part of their offense, dishing the ball outside to players for shots and also sometimes taking on two or three defenders himself on the front end.

As the minutes started ticking down, Thunder sophomore Kanon Heaton made a commanding run, creating a breakaway and drilled a shot directly at Redmen keeper who knocked the ball out. A corner kick ensued but the goal was protected by Cedar defense.

The half ended and Cedar was the only team on the board.

“At half time we just told them you need to start connecting more passes,” Cedar head coach Scott Kamachi said. “We were just kicking the ball down the field and wearing out our forwards because they were running back and forth, back and forth so much.”

Desert Hills pushed well in the second half, stringing together a response, but weren’t able to capitalize. With fifteen minutes left in the second half, Heaton was able to pull Osborne out of his box and able to shoot a widely uncontested shot but at an angle extremely far to the left making the shot difficult. It crossed the goal and missed the outside post, seconds after Thunder senior Tanner Browning slid barely missing the put-in to close the goal.

With only five minutes left, Shipp scored on a header, his second goal of the game. After the team ran back, he crouched as if trying to compose himself from all the excitement of scoring twice.

After the game, Shipp still was smiling. “I’m pretty excited, still pretty happy,” Shipp said.

During the second goal, Shipp planned to stay back post. “Noah hill got it [back post] for me and I just put it in the back of the net I guess.”

After the second goal and with Desert Hills unable to finish a goal, the game ended with Redmen up 2-0.
