Prescribed burn scheduled for Dixie National Forest

CEDAR CITY – The Cedar City Ranger District will begin its spring prescribed burn program in the Dixie National Forest beginning this month and will last through May.

“These projects are part of a continuing effort to reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfire to mountain communities and improve forest health.” Cedar City District Ranger Veronica Magnuson said.

Prescribed Fire located 5 miles northeast of Panguitch Lake. The project area is mostly comprised of ponderosa pine, aspen, mixed conifer, pinyon and juniper, and multiple shrub, grass, and forb species. There is a large component of dead woody debris in the understory, or thinning slash, which is the main focus of this burn. One of the main goals is to remove a large portion of the thinning slash in the understory of the Ponderosa Pine by prescribed fire. This will result in a much more fire resilient stand of healthy Ponderosa Pine.

Duck Creek Fuels Aspen, 200 Acres – small portion of the yellow section on map

Duck Creek Fuels Aspen Burn area is located in the greater Duck Creek area. Slash fuels are produced from thinning, lopping and scattering. The goal of this prescribed fire is to create stands of fire-resistant tree species, stimulate aspen regeneration, reduce heavy fuel loading, increase the frequency of grasses, forbs, and shrubs, and reduce the risk of catastrophic crown fire throughout the Duck Creek Fuels Project Area.
