ST. GEORGE – Snow Canyon extended their four-game winning streak with a 12-3 win in only six innings over Pine View on Friday at Warrior field.
Pine View came into the game confident, coming off a 12-2 win over Hurricane on Tuesday, but only tallied three runs, four hits and made six errors in Friday’s game.
Warriors had one goal in mind during the game, said head coach Brandyn Sargent, to not have any strike outs looking. On that goal they were successful.
“We had zero strike outs looking so that’s a good note,” Sargent said. “Our intensity level was down today. I think our performance level overall, I would give it like a five today. It could have been a lot better.”
Snow Canyon tallied 12 runs, eight hits and two errors, but made many mental mistakes that Sargent said they could have improved on.
“It’s more mental errors like not hustling to a ball or not letting the ball roll foul. Little things that we exercise in practice that they need to take over here to the game,” Sargent said. “There will be a lot of hitting and a lot of running for Monday, so we will be ready (for the next game).”
The Warriors started the game strong, not allowing any runs in the first three innings and putting four on the board themselves, giving them a strong lead. In the fourth inning, Pine View brought a player home, but Snow Canyon responded with four runs of their own. The fifth inning was the last scoring inning for the Panthers, and Snow Canyon tallied four more runs making their total 12 in the sixth.
Snow Canyon senior Ashlee Miller said communication could have been better, but overall it was a strong team effort.
“I feel like it went good,” Miller said. “We definitely didn’t play to the best of our abilities, but we definitely played good.”
Warrior assistant coach Jesse Shipp and junior catcher Skylar Gates celebrated birthdays on Friday, but Gates did not let it affect her performance.
“I wasn’t even thinking about it at all,” Gates said. “Pineview is a really great team. We made some errors that we shouldn’t have made. We could have done better for sure but I know that we will. Learning from our mistakes.”
After the game, Shipp, Gates and the Snow Canyon team celebrated the win and birthdays with brownies from local bakery Craving’s located in Santa Clara.
Both teams will go on the road for their next games, Snow Canyon at Hurricane on Tuesday at 4 p.m. while Pine View heads to Canyon View also on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
