Man ruins stepfather’s motorcycle ‘in rage’ after getting Xbox shut off

ST. GEORGE – A 19-year-old St. George man was arrested Thursday after damaging his stepfather’s motorcycle in a fit of self-described rage. The incident was reportedly triggered when the stepfather turned of the younger man’s Xbox.

St. George Police Officer David McDaniel was dispatched to a domestic violence incident at a home on 1100 North after the stepfather of 19-year-old Alec Young called police, according to a probable cause statement written by the officer.

The stepfather said he had returned home and found his stepson, Young, playing video games on his Xbox. He asked Young to stop and turn off the TV, and gave him a couple of minutes to do so while he went outside to get the mail. When he returned and found Young still playing on the Xbox, he turned the video game console off himself. This action evidently didn’t set well with Young.

Young started screaming at his stepfather and threw two remotes at him, breaking the remotes in the process, according to the report. The stepfather retreated across the street and called the police. At this time Young also went outside and started attacking his stepfather’s 2009 Custom Harley Davidson FLF motorcycle with a knife. The motorcycle was valued at $40,000, the report said.

“He punched and hit the bike repeatedly,” McDaniel wrote. “(He) then knocked it down and continued to to strike the motorcycle until he broke the knife blade off the handle.”

The assault on the motorcycle wasn’t finished as Young then got into his 2000 Nissan Maxima, backed out of the driveway, “then flooded his Maxima into the motorcycle, pushing it into the garage and all the way into the wall of the garage.”

“The motorcycle sustained damage everywhere,” McDaniel said in the report. “The front forks, fender, frame, and gas tank were all bent.”

Coupled with the damage to the garage and the two broken remotes, overall damages are estimated in excess of $25,000.

Young then fled the scene and went to a friend’s house in Ivins where he was contacted by police. After being told his Miranda rights, Young said he had “acted out” when he threw the remotes at his stepfather. He then went after the motorcycle “in rage.” When his hitting it didn’t cause enough damage to the motorcycle, he told police he got in his car and ran over the motorcycle on purpose.

“(Young) stated he had done everything on purpose,” MeDaniel said.

While being transported to Washington County’s Purgatory Correctional Facility, Young told McDaniel he had missed the last two doses of anti-anxeity and anti-depression medication he is supposed to be taking.

He felt the lack of medication assisted in his acting out today,” McDaniel said.

Young was charged with two class-B misdemeanors for domestic violence simple assault and leaving the scene of an accident. He was also charged with a second-degree felony for domestic violence criminal mischief. According to booking information, his bail stands at $13,110.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

Gee, and on whom can he blame not taking his medicine? He IS an adult. I sure wouldn’t let him back in my house. Period.

  • Dolly March 21, 2014 at 8:41 pm

Looks like those disciplinary “time-outs” during the tantrums of his formative years didn’t quite cut the mustard.

  • Brian March 21, 2014 at 8:46 pm

    Medication, or no medication….What a dumb…*
    Ed. ellipsis …*

  • KanabCowgirl March 21, 2014 at 10:45 pm

Oh, well you see I didn’t remember my meds.
Hello? Why do you not take responsibility for your bad actions? IMHO those who feel they must rely on meds are just foolish!

  • enufsaid March 22, 2014 at 7:36 am

The dad should of grabbed his belt and gave this kid a took oil fashion ass whoop in

    • Chris March 22, 2014 at 11:19 am

“should of” ?! Try “should have.”

  • Domestic March 22, 2014 at 8:47 am

Now if he had taken his rage out on some female, the charges and bail probably would have been less severe. In southern Utah, doesn’t a motorcycle, especially a Harley, have more worth than any female? Remember how those three males got off easy after terrorizing that young girl?

  • HUMMYNBYRD March 22, 2014 at 10:03 am

Sounds like this dad should have grabbed his belt a long time ago…just saying.

  • Druggies March 22, 2014 at 2:33 pm

How many kids in St George are on some sort of medication? How many of their parents are also on medication? Why are so many people on medication for depression, Attention Disorders and other symptoms and illnesses their parents probably read in some magazine they picked up at the checkout stand? Yeah, your kid has all those symptoms, just like all those insightful horoscopes apply to you, and drugs are the cure to all those symptoms (not patient and adult parenting). Nope. Get drugs! Maybe “Dixie” should be scrubbed off the rock, and “MEDICATED” painted in its place to represent the true Dixie, no, make that MEDICATED spirit of this area.

  • Brian Daniels March 22, 2014 at 6:35 pm

@Druggies – truly your circular reasoning is dizzying… show me your proof of exactly how many “kids and parents that are on medication” as a percentage of the population in St. George. My wife works at the mental hospital in St. George. It is people like you who pass misinformation that causes many patients a great deal of heartache and struggle because they don’t think that medication can help them… interesting how most of those people end up self-medicating anyway when they become adults and its people like you who tell them it’s because “your parents weren’t patient enough with you” or ” your parents didn’t act like adults and properly parent you”. Many people actually have problems that DO require medication and IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHETHER THEIR PARENTS WERE GOOD PARENTS OR NOT. My wife sees it all the time with people who were GREAT parents and yet their child suffers emotionally, psychologically, mentally, and behaviorally… Are there parents who can be better parents? yes… Are there parents who use medication to supplant good parenting? yes… but you have no idea how many do any of these things so quit with your broad brush and go paint somewhere else.

@KanabCowgirl – you are more foolish than anyone you call a fool who relies on medication. Get out of your house more and realize that SOME people do need to rely on medication. Quit with your “pharmaceutical companies are evil” ideology. These pharmaceutical companies have helped in prolonging the life of people today, INSTEAD OF DYING BY AGE 35 like your holistic approach brought mankind for 100,000 years or more. So, you don’t have to currently rely on medication? wonderful for you… I guarantee that someday you will (i.e… when you get older) unless you prefer dying 20 years earlier than you should or being in extreme pain. When that someday comes, I hope you remember back to the times you told everyone in your life how foolish people are for relying on medication as you are now faced with the choice of either needing a surgery without morphine or dying instead of taking blood pressure medication. Take all the supplements you want, eat out of your garden, get your colonics monthly, etc… and enjoy your life without passing judgments on what you think all people should do.

@dolly – a lot of assumptions you make about how many ” time-outs” or “tamtrums” this 19 year old had in his life up to that point. Ever heard of a calm person who just snapped? How do you know what is in this case? Is plausibility on your side? likely… But you act like you know and you haven’t thought of all possibilities about what brought this 19 year old to this breaking point… WHICH COULD BE HE JUST SNAPPED.

@Brian – agreed… not the best way to approach a problem

@Dan – agree I wouldn’t let him back in my house if he went this far in a fit of rage

@enufsaid – you are so right… use violence to escalate the situation and make it worse. Sounds like you need a lesson in civility and patience from the 19 year olds step-father when dealing with violence… if you have a way out, USE IT. He did the smart thing by going across the street and calling the cops. Grab a belt and whip a 19 year old who has a knife? If this is your definition of handling the problem then I won’t be surprised to see your name in the paper one day as the victim of an escalated domestic issue.

@hummynbyrd – Do you really think that every situation where a parent used the belt on their kid when they were young presented a healthy adult who wouldn’t go into a fit of rage like this? Give it a rest… you have no idea how much of “the belt” this 19 year old got when he was younger.

I do not know this family at all and all I can really say about this article is: what a shame that this incident happened. I’m glad no one got injured and I hope that the 19 year old discovers better coping methods with how to deal with situations that anger him.

    • Get Off The Pills March 22, 2014 at 9:09 pm

I think you need to take your meds Brian.

      • Brian Daniels March 23, 2014 at 4:50 pm

In fact, I take absolutely no medication except some ibuprofen every now and again when I have had a hard day of hiking or working…. based on your name here it sounds like we know who the one is that does the drugs. I’ve never drank a drop of alcohol, never used any illicit/illegal drugs, and only taken prescription narcotics after a tough surgery where I had a compound fracture of my ankle (took for 1 week) so you can stick it. Learn to add something of value to the conversation like a reasonable person would do instead of making assumptions like many people on here have so far. Otherwise, your comment is worthless.

    • chupacabra March 23, 2014 at 1:04 am

The only thing I can add to Brian’s comment is “ditto”, and yes as a kid the teachers made dittos by hand. Cranking a wheel round and round would provide us the material we needed to do our classwork.

    • e.t. March 23, 2014 at 2:22 am

I completely agree with you 100% Brian Daniels. It people like you who help people like myself deal with depression. As for those of you who think we medicate because we are bored or did some stupid survery online you’re wrong. My family on both sides suffer from depression, bipolar disorder and other mental health issues. I didnt pick it up on a social media site I inherited it. Thanks again Brian for sticking up for people like us as for this young guy I hope he gets the help he needs and realizes skipping doses even if its just one or two can knock you off the top of the totem pole and you have to work your way back up.

P.s. I dont know your wife but please tell her I said thanks for her hard work and understanding that its not just a “phase”

    • Druggies March 23, 2014 at 8:29 am

That was a wordy response, much like what you’d expect from someone taking some form of medication. Based on the comments, it seems that in St George, the resolution to children issues is to either beat the kids or medicate the kids. Such model parenting, beat ’em or drug ’em. Welcome to Utah!

      • Brian Daniels March 23, 2014 at 4:45 pm

I’ve never drank a drop of alcohol, never used any illicit/illegal drugs, and only taken prescription narcotics after a tough surgery where I had a compound fracture of my ankle (took for 1 week) so you can stick it. And still… you have provided no solid proof of just what percent of the population in Southern Utah is choosing daily to medicate their children instead of “parenting them”. Until then you are spouting off inaccurate information.

        • Druggies March 23, 2014 at 9:30 pm

One source is http://www.health.utah.gov/vipp/RxDrugs/overview.html and another is http://www.deseretnews.com/article/660200893/Utah-No-1-in-prescription-drug-abuse.html?pg=all and another is http://www.ksl.com/?sid=17910985 and the list could go on and on and on, but you’d deny it just like many others deny the truth

        • Druggies March 23, 2014 at 9:35 pm

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865577322/Judges-arrest-shines-light-on-Utahs-prescription-drug-abuse-problem.html?pg=all mentions teenagers taking drugs. You could also look up government statistics, but you’d probably think they’re just lying.

          • Brian Daniels March 26, 2014 at 1:13 am

Absolutely agree with each one of those articles AND actually agree with many of the government statistics about prescription drug abuse/use that is a problem in Utah by adults (and I have read many). However, you are a classic SIDESTEPPER that is usually seen in these comment sections because you still have provided not one scintilla of evidence that shows a percent of the parents in Southern Utah that choose to drug their kids (as you previously suggested) instead of “patiently caring and parenting” their children. You know why? because you have NONE. Every article you provided only shows that prescription drugs are abused and used by adults (generally talking about opiates) and that because of the wide availability in the homes, teenagers are stealing them and some kids get poisoned. We will all wait while you provide us with the evidence to back up your suggestion that the majority of Southern Utah parents place their kids on medication instead of parenting them. Or, you can apologize for painting your broad brush without anything to back up what you say. When you look in the mirror next time you can see the person that “denies the truth” and is “lying”.

      • Just me March 23, 2014 at 9:53 pm

Druggies, what a name. Its people like you that make me want to see more education put out there. you are probably the person that says “he killed himself, what a selfish person” Get educated help a young person like this out before its to late.

  • Bender March 22, 2014 at 11:30 pm

$40k Harley? Sounds like some misplaced priorities. Just my opinion.

  • Mean momma March 23, 2014 at 12:02 am

Seems like a spoiled teenager who can’t handle not getting his way. Shame. Shame.

  • Bub March 23, 2014 at 1:03 am

It’s strange how mental health is handled in mormon culture…

  • cha cha March 23, 2014 at 1:19 am

Brian Daniels, thank you! You said it all and right! My son grew up with Alec, not real close but close enough. He blew up and lost it! The kid has been struggling psychologically for years and it has nothing to do with his father. I suffer from Fibromyalgia at the age of 38… I eat right, exercise work 40+ hours a week and unfortunately have to take medication. Try waking up every morning feeling like you have been hit by a truck because I can’t get out of bed right away and I have wide spread pain. Not a nice morning but I make the best of them. People and their self righteousness… Like you said; God forbid later in life these people are told they have to rely on medication in order to function let alone stay alive. Thank you again Brian for expressing what some of us wanted to say. I wouldn’t wish my ailments and how I feel everyday, all day on my worst enemy. I hope this incident will get Alec the help he truly needs.

  • Just me March 23, 2014 at 9:48 pm

I am on anti depressants, I am very aware that missing even a week that I would not act like that boy did. The only reason I am saying I am on these medications though has nothing to do with the story however but the ignorance of all the self centered jerks on here that obviously know nothing about depression. Religion has nothing to do with it. I could give you all a lesson in depression and the sicknesses and physical pain people deal with daily. I am simply going to say I eat right and am very fit I also work a full time job and have 4 kids. I take medications for depression and anxiety daily. Some people use it as a crutch I don’t know this kid so I cant really judge him other than that he needs to learn how to control medications and his actions, I hope he can learn how to. I think people need to know what they are talking about before throwing opinions. Thank you Brian for what you said. Maybe someone who knows nothing about depression should take a kid needing help with depression under their wing and learn how debilitating it can be.

    • Brian Daniels March 26, 2014 at 1:20 am

you are most welcome and I hope the best for you in your life! I also agree with you, and the subsequent reason I write on these comment sections, too many opinions thrown around as fact in this world and not enough evidence to back up what a person spouts off!

  • DoubleTap March 24, 2014 at 9:08 am

WOW…wish I had the time to respond to every commentor on this story.
Just shows some people have way too much time on their hands. Brian Daniels…have you considered applying for a writing position with STGNews?

    • Brian Daniels March 26, 2014 at 1:17 am

sorry you don’t have much time on your hands. Do you have this secret formula for how a person should spend their time? I would be interested to know if you ever had time to watch tv or browse the internet for an hour in a day? If so, sounds like I also have something in common with you… except I spend my recreational time a little different from you. I have not inquired about a writing position, but I’m sure it would be fun if writing was your thing…

  • zipnipnub March 24, 2014 at 12:50 pm

I agree bub it is strange .

  • Brighat March 24, 2014 at 7:20 pm

This story has been making the rounds on major video game sites. This Alec Young individual certainly didn’t think straight. To destroy property because your stepdad asked you to do something other than play video games is an example of poor judgment, meds or no meds. Hope he enjoys his stay in jail.

  • StgDerick March 28, 2014 at 10:43 am

I’m wondering why this Alec Young isn’t showing up at the Purgatory Bookings website???

    • StgDerick March 28, 2014 at 10:45 am

oh just realized this is an old story. Sorry. He probably was when it happened, you can ignore or delete this.

  • TrollsRUs March 28, 2014 at 1:14 pm
