ST. GEORGE – An 18-year-old man was taken to the hospital Friday afternoon after falling 20 feet from a rock formation behind the Dixie Rock, also known as the historic Sugarloaf, at Pioneer Park on Red Hills Parkway in St. George.
Around 2 p.m., emergency responders were dispatched to an area behind the Dixie Rock where a hiker had fallen from a height of about 20 feet, St. George Fire Chief Robert Stoker said.
“He went to look over the edge (of the rock formation) and went to grab a hand-hold on one of the rocks. As he did the rock broke free,” Stoker said. “He lost his balance and went off the edge.”
The man was conscious and alert when emergency responders arrived, Stoker said. He was able to feel and move his limbs, but did complain of pain in his lower back and left wrist.
The hiker was transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George where he will be X-rayed as a precaution, Stoker said.
“So far his injuries seem non-life-threatening,” the fire chief said, “but we’re taking all precautions for neck and back injuries.”
Stoker said the hiker was lucky to be in relatively good condition after falling off the rock formation.
