ST. GEORGE – The local Air Force Junior ROTC program welcomes the support of its youth program by inviting community members to sponsor the second annual AFJROTC Dixie Wing Charity Golf Tournament hosted by the Booster Club to be held at SunRiver Golf Course on March 22.
The JROTC
Now in its eighth year, the JROTC Wing serves cadets from Washington County School District high schools and five middle schools who are seeking opportunity to learn principles of good citizenship, responsibility, teamwork and community service, according to a fundraising letter.
For many cadets, this program is a lifeline to keep them in school and for others, it is a means of garnering valuable scholarships and Air Force Academy appointments. Keeping this program thriving requires a strong partnership between the cadre – the Air Force JROTC faculty – and its cadets, their families, JROTC Staff, Booster Club, Utah businesses and community members, the letter said.
As a result of the mandatory federal budget cuts known as sequestration and loss of over $25,000 this school year, the ability to maintain JROTC’s travel program has been eliminated and may put its summer camp program in jeopardy as well.
“Even during these tough economic times, we can still pull together as a community in support of what matters most,” retired Air Force Col. Glenn Whicker wrote in a fundraising letter.
The Tournament
The Dixie Wing Charity Golf Tournament will feature special guests, three-time World Boxing Champion, Tony “The Tiger” Lopez, movie and TV star Rick Ravanello, movie and TV star Brian Krause, Lynn “Capt’n Crush” Ray from the Guinness World Book of Records, and Devin Dixon, host of “The Drive” on ESPN 106.1 FM radio.
The cost to enter the golf tournament is $150 per person or $500 for a team of four. Those who don’t golf can also get involved by becoming major sponsors: $350 for a hole sponsorship, or $500 for a team sponsorship. Sponsors can choose to be recognized as an individual, organization or business.
“We must invest in our youth, many of whom will be the future leaders and protectors of our country,” Whicker said. “Your donation will truly make a difference in their lives.”
