Region 9 basketball: Inside tonight’s match-ups, 1/29

Tonight’s Region 9 boys basketball games — Wed., Jan. 29

————————–

Snow Canyon (10-5, 5-1) at Pine View (15-2, 6-1), 7 p.m., at the Pit
Broadcast: Triplecast! Video streaming on STGNews.com; ESPNRadio 106.1 FM; CEC-TV 22 (Baja Cable)

WARRIORS
snow-canyon-smCoach: James Brown
Record: 10-5 overall, 5-1 in region
Streak: 3 win
Last Five: 4-1
PPG: 57.7
PAPG: 56.0
Probable starters: Hayden Anderson (6.2 ppg), Nate Gottfredson (15.8), Tanner Sampson (9.1), Chase Jenkins (4.9), Jacob Frei (8.7)
Other key contributors: Brock Staheli (3.3), Warner Rigby (3.9), Kade Potter (1.8)

PANTHERS
Pine-view-smCoach: Darrell Larsen
Record: 14-2 overall, 6-1 in region
Streak: 7 wins
Last five: 5-0
PPG: 66.2
PAPG: 53.9
Probable starters: Chaz Peterson (10.4), Jack Bangerter (7.8), Kody Wilstead (13.6), Collin Dowdell (10.6), Jed Newby (5.9)
Other key contributors: Ryan Koller (9.9), Garrett Bowker (2.5), Kendrick Spencer (1.6)

Game Outlook: The motivation is high and the coaches are saying all the right things. Brown: “I’m sure they’ll be ready for us.” Larsen: “Snow Canyon is a great basketball team.” This game will go a long way in deciding who the region champion will be, though there are too many games left to declare tonight’s winner the region champ. The Warriors won the first meeting 42 days ago (Dec. 18) at the Jungle, roaring out to a 17-point lead in the first half. Pine View cut it to three in the third quarter, but never did completely catch SC in the 72-66 game. Fouls were a big factor with Wilstead and Dowdell in trouble early and Gottfredson and Anderson in trouble late. The guard match-ups will be intriguing, too, with Peterson/Bangerter vs. Jenkins/Sampson. Peterson and Bangerter have combined for 39 3-pointers. Jenkins and Sampson have tallied 29. The X factors will be Newby and Koller vs. Frei and Rigby.

Hurricane (5-12, 1-6) at Dixie (9-7, 2-5), 7 p.m. at the Hangar
Broadcast: KDXU 890-AM with Devin Dixon

TIGERS
hurricane-smCoach: Todd Langston
Record: 5-12 overall, 1-6 in region
losses
Last Five: 0-5
PPG: 47.6
PAPG: 53.9
Probable starters: Kaden Langston (8.1 ppg), Jayce Housley (6.6), Cody LeBaron (12.2), Jordan Ence (2.7), Erik Mitchell (4.2)
Other key contributors: James Bennion (4.3), Austen Beatty (4.7), Austin Butler (1.2)

FLYERS
dixie-smCoach: Ryan Cuff
Record: 9-7 overall, 2-5 in region
Streak: 3 losses

PPG: 54.1
PAPG: 51.6
Probable starters: RJ Wilgar (7.9 ppg), Tyler Bennett (6.0), Harrison Labrum (4.8), Jake Hawes (14.1), Jake Christiansen (3.9)
Other key contributors: Izaic Blazzard (2.9) Nate Crockett (2.1), Jayden Roberts (1.8), Sam Guymon (10.0 — out with ankle injury)

Game outlook: The Tigers got their lone region win of the season against Dixie, 54-53, back in December and in the process burst Dixie’s bubble. The Flyers had just blasted Desert Hills and had early visions of a region title. Since then, the two teams have combined to go just 2-11 in region. For Hurricane, the role of spoiler has presented itself early and it starts tonight. A season sweep of Dixie would almost certainly end any playoff hopes for the Flyers and the two teams match up fairly well. Plus the Tigers are building for the future with a lot of young players on the squad. As for Dixie, this is a must win if the playoffs are in the future. Hawes is playing well, but with Guymon still out, someone else needs to help shoulder the scoring load.

Desert Hills (9-7, 4-3) at Cedar (9-7, 4-3), 7 p.m. at the Cedar High Gymnasium
Broadcast: 590-AM KSUB with Chris Holmes

THUNDER
Desert-Hills-smCoach: Wade Turley
Record: 9-7 overall, 4-3 in region
Streak: 1 win
Last five: 3-2
PPG: 52.1
PAPG: 49.0
Probable starters: Taylor Houston (7.4 ppg), Quincy Matthews (13.2), Brycen Williams (5.0), Trey Tanner (6.4), Jordan Hokanson (6.8)
Other key contributors: Landen Broadhead (4.0), Sam Messinger (3.8), Austin Adams (4.5)

 REDMEN
cedar-smCoach: Craig Cardon
Record: 9-7 overall, 4-3 in region
Streak: 2 wins
Last five: 3-2
PPG: 52.3
PAPG: 47.9
Probable starters: Kordan Nielson (17.4 ppg), Dustin Staggs (13.2), Kyle Wood (5.8), Weston Bettridge (2.8), Greyson Hulet (2.6)
Other key contributors: Kole Dotson (2.1), James Thompson (1.7), Ben Brown (.4), Jaren Forsyth (2.1)

Game Outlook: Maybe lost a little in the headline of the Pine View-Snow Canyon first-place battle is this one for third place. The winner of this game still has an outside shot at a region title and a very good chance at second place. Desert Hills beat Cedar by a 48-40 final back in December in a game the Redmen led most of the night. Tanner and Staggs will bang hard inside, but we like the guard battle between Nielson and Mathews. Nielson has more range, but Mathews is bigger and more physical. These are the two best defenses in the region, so points will be at a premium and every possession will be valuable. Expect the winner to have around 50.
