ST. GEORGE — After attendees left the fourth annual St. George Travel Expo Wednesday it is likely they couldn’t help but yearn for a vacation. The expo was lined with destination travel agencies with booths beckoning visitors to hop on a plane, bus, or cruise ship for a getaway. Tons of getaway destinations – like the Mediterranean, Hawaii, Alaska and Jamaica – were represented at the expo.
Expo organizer Gary Sorensen estimated that there were approximately 4-500 more people at this year’s expo compared to previous years. He estimated that around 2,000 people attended this year.
The expo’s growth seems to be following the uphill slope that the travel industry is experiencing here locally, Sorensen said. Sorensen is also the Regional Manager at St. George’s Morris Murdock travel agency and said the travel industry continues to grow here in Southern Utah.
The local travel and vacation industry wasn’t hit really hard when the economy crashed because of the retired population, Sorensen said. However, it is stronger now, and it’s continuing to pick up speed, he said.
The top destinations for local vacationers are Alaska, Europe – especially Mediterranean cruises and river cruises – and Hawaii.
If you missed the expo, you can always stop by Morris Murdock, a full service travel agency who can book a reservation for a hotel in Mesquite or a safari in Africa, Sorensen said.
