ST. GEORGE — At approximately 3:10 p.m. the St. George Fire Department responded to a vehicle that caught fire at Dixie 4 Wheel Drive, an auto shop that does custom Jeep builds in St. George.
The fire stayed within the confines of an old broken down Jeep Cherokee and was extinguished by the shop employees, General Manager Bryce Thompson said. However, the St. George Fire Department was still dispatched to the scene at 73 N. 900 E. and a large black plume of smoke could be seen across town.
The fire started when an employee was scrapping metal out of the Cherokee behind the shop where the vehicle was parked, Thompson said. The employee was using a torch to cut up the Cherokee – a common practice at the shop – so that it could be taken to a salvage yard, Thompson said.
There were no injuries reported.
