Stewart honors former St. George Mayor Dan McArthur on House Floor

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Chris Stewart honored former St. George Mayor, Dan McArthur in a speech on the House Floor, paying tribute to his decades of public service.

The text of the speech is below:

Mr. Speaker, today I want to congratulate all of the newly elected officials in Utah’s 2nd Congressional District. Specifically, Jon Pike, the new mayor of St. George.  I look forward to working with Mayor Pike to continue to grow the economy in Washington County.

I want to take a moment to thank out going Mayor Dan McArthur, who tirelessly served the people of St. George, Utah for 20 years. Under his tenure, the population nearly tripled in size and the city experienced enormous economic growth including the development and expansion of hundreds of businesses, new infrastructure, a beautiful new airport and the transformation of Dixie State College into a four-year university.

Mayor Dan is a true representation of the Dixie spirit.

His volunteerism was shown in 2005 when homes along the Virgin River were threatened by severe flooding. With the help of city council members and members of the community, the city came together to sandbag the area to prevent further damage.

I am pleased to call Mayor Dan a friend and I’m grateful for his fine example of public service and devotion to his community. I wish him and his family all the best in their future endeavors.
