Region 9 boys basketball: Tonight’s match-ups

——————-

Tonight’s Region 9 games

————————–

Dixie (8-3, 1-1) at Pine View (9-2, 1-1), 7 p.m. at the Pit
Broadcast: Triplecast! Video streaming on STGNews.com; ESPN 106.1 FM Radio; CEC-TV 22 (Baja Cable)

FLYERS
dixie-smCoach: Ryan Cuff
Record: 8-3 overall, 1-1 in region
Streak: 2 wins
PPG: 56.6
PAPG: 48.4
Probable starters: RJ Wilgar (8.8 ppg), Sam Guymon (10.0), Harrison Labrum (5.4), Jake Hawes (12.5), Jake Christiansen (4.2)
Other key contributors: Tyler Bennett (6.3), Izaic Blazzard (2.8)

PANTHERS
Pine-view-smCoach: Darrell Larsen
Record: 9-2 overall, 1-1 in region
Streak: 2 wins
PPG: 69.6
PAPG: 58.2
Probable starters: Chaz Peterson (11.2), Jack Bangerter (9.9), Kody Wilstead (14.6), Collin Dowdell (10.8), Jed Newby (6.6)
Other key contributors: Ryan Koller (8.9), Garrett Bowker (2.7)

Game Outlook: Dixie’s jaw-dropping drubbing of Desert Hills was tempered by the loss to Hurricane. The Flyers don’t have the offensive tools to win a 70-plus point race, so defense will be key. For Pine View, Wilstead and Dowdell have to dominate inside, plus the Panthers want to run, run, run. Both teams can hit the trey: PV has 55 3-pointers, Dixie has 53. In Region 9, good teams must protect the home court.

Desert Hills (6-5, 1-1) at Hurricane (5-7, 1-1), 7 p.m. at the Tiger’s Den
Broadcast: None

THUNDER
Desert-Hills-smCoach: Wade Turley
Record: 6-5 overall, 1-1 in region
Streak: 2 wins
PPG: 52.0
PAPG: 49.1
Probable starters: Taylor Houston (6.9 ppg), Quincy Matthews (13.0), Brycen Williams (5.3), Trey Tanner (6.5), Landen Broadhead (4.5)
Other key contributors: Jordan Hokanson (6.2), Sam Messinger (4.6), Austin Adams (4.0)

TIGERS
hurricane-smCoach: Todd Langston
Record: 5-7 overall, 1-1 in region
Streak: 1 loss
PPG: 49.9
PAPG: 51.8
Probable starters: Kaden Langston (9.2 ppg), Jayce Housley (7.8), Cody LeBaron (12.9), Austen Beatty (4.8), Erik Mitchell (5.0)
Other key contributors: James Bennion (3.9), Jordan Ence (3.5)

Game outlook: The Thunder have played pretty well in four of their last five games, but still struggle with consistency. The “football guys” should be acclimated to basketball now, so we’ll see if DH can get it rolling. For Hurricane, a 5-2 record in the last seven games makes the Tigers an interesting team as we hit the heavy region stretch. They beat Dixie at home, can they also handle Desert Hills? This should be a defensive war with fewer than 55 points apiece.

————————–

Snow Canyon (6-4, 1-0) at Canyon View (3-8, 0-1), 7 p.m. at the Falcon’s Nest
Broadcast: None

WARRIORS
snow-canyon-smCoach: James Brown
Record: 6-4 overall, 1-0 in region
Streak: 1 loss
PPG: 59.2
PAPG: 62.7
Probable starters: Hayden Anderson (5.5 ppg), Nate Gottfredson (16.2), Tanner Sampson (11.0), Chase Jenkins (6.1), Jacob Frei (8.9)
Other key contributors: Brock Staheli (4.0), Warner Rigby (2.5)

FALCONS
canyon-view-smCoach: Rob Potter
Record: 3-8 overall, 0-1 in region
Streak: 1 loss
PPG: 51.8
PAPG: 59.5
Probable starters: Keaton Kringlen (9.3 ppg), Koy Huxford (8.2), Sterling Barnes (5.3), Derek Dunnell (4.4), Ty Nielson (4.1)
Other key contributors: Travis Bettridge (3.8), Ryan Jensen (3.0)

Game outlook: Skilled big man Gottfredson is starting to really dominate and he has a chance for a big night tonight with the undersized Falcons. Sampson has become a reliable shooter/scorer (20 3-pointers so far). SC wants to run. For the Falcons, doubling Gottfredson and being aware of SC’s shooters is key. To win, CV must make this a lowdown dogfight. Key number is 60. If the game tops that plateau, it will be a Snow Canyon win.
