ARIZONA STRIP — The first phase of long-term bridge repairs on Arizona’s portion of Interstate 15 started Monday. Impacts on traffic through the highly traveled Virgin River Gorge between St. George and Las Vegas are minimal thus far.
“Construction crews are still just getting set up,”Arizona Highway Patrol Sgt. John Bottoms said. “They’ve run into delays.”
As of 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, the northbound left lane is closed at mile posts 12 and 21, but traffic delays are not significant. All southbound lanes are clear.
Delays in the near future will be concentrated on the northbound side, Bottoms said, as construction crews are starting there. The Arizona Department of Transportation is working to reinforce decks and joints on weakening bridges in the Gorge, a project that is expected to take about 130 days to complete.
