His father bought him a correspondence course in electricity that he completed while a senior in high school.  He continued his electricity studies at Weber College in Ogden, Utah.   In 1942, he joined the Navy and during his training to become a pilot he married Beth Call in 1944.  Howard 996073_791189950896509_339965206_nbecame a Navy Ensign and flight instructor, eventually flying 4-engine transport planes throughout the Pacific Islands.

Their mission was the highlight of their lives.  After their mission they built a home in Leeds, Utah, where they lived for 13 years.  They then moved to Hurricane, Utah.
