ST. GEORGE – You can’t score if you don’t get a shot off. Pine View found that out the hard way late Friday night in a 71-62 loss to Mountain View at the Burns Arena on the second day of the Red Rock Rumble.

Pine-view-smmtviewWith four minutes left to play, the Panthers held a one-point lead, 58-57, over the Bruins in a game that had been tightly contested all night. The next seven possessions for the Panthers resulted in six turnovers and one missed shot. Mountain View scored on every possession over the same two-minute span and, with two minutes to go, the Bruins had a 13-point lead, 71-58. Two Kody Wilstead field goals narrowed the final tally to 71-62.

“We just imploded. We played a very good game to that point,” said Panther head coach Darrell Larson. “We had handled their pressure for 28 minutes, but that two-minute stretch doomed us. And it was too late in the game to overcome.”

Turnovers had been a problem for the Panthers the whole game, but they also forced several Bruin turnovers to keep the game in check,.

The Panthers jumped out early in the first quarter behind excellent play from Colin Dowdell. The senior forward had 12 points in the quarter, ending in a 17-13 PV lead.

In the second quarter, the Panthers would jump out to their largest lead, 26-17, sparked by two Chaz Peterson field goals. The Bruins would close however behind the inside play of Manuel Ortiz and Carsen Williams, ending the half down two, 34-32.

The third quarter was back and forth as the Panthers would match the continued inside play of the Bruins with Wilstead and Ryan Koller combining for 12 points. The Panthers went into the fourth with the slimmest of margins, 50-49.

The game stayed close until the Panthers’ offensive breakdown with four minutes to go. Ryan Warner and Spencer Conrad scored all 14 Bruin points during the rally.

Conrad led all scorers with 17. Four other Bruins scored in double-figures. Ortiz and Wyatt Allred scored 14 and 13, respectively. Warner and Williams chipped in 11 apiece.

For the Panthers, Wilstead had 14. Dowdell finished with 13. Peterson and Koller both finished with 10.

The win moves Mountain View to 5-1. The Bruins will face Snow Canyon in their Red Rock Rumble finale at 11:45 Saturday morning.

The loss drops Pine View to 7-2. The Panthers will face Maple Mountain Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
