WASHINGTON CITY — The people of Washington City honored their friends, family, and loved ones who have served in the military with a parade and a ceremony at Veterans Park today.
“Washington City is known for their celebration of veterans,” local resident Jean Arbuckle said. “They honor the veterans themselves with the ceremony afterwards honoring every branch of the military,” she said.
Truman Leishman of St. George, said that he comes to the parade because it reminds him about the important sacrifices that others have made in the past. “I’d like to remember the men and women who gave their lives for our country,” Leishman said.

The parade began at 11:11 a.m. this year and followed its normal route along Telegraph Street. Afterward, a ceremony was held at Veterans Park to commemorate the day, and to recognize the service of those who had served.
Children from local elementary schools read poems and short essays about the importance of the day, and a choir of children sang a song honoring each branch of the service. Washington City Mayor Ken Neilson spoke about the importance of family and religion and Taps was played as the crowd observed a moment of silence for fallen veterans.
Arbuckle said that the ceremony put on by Washington City means a lot to her. “It’s nice to see the city honoring those who have served,” she said. “They are showing them the respect that these good people deserve.”
