CEDAR CITY – After two hours of negotiating with a suicidal man who was laying in the road with a knife to his throat, the Iron County Sheriff SWAT team along with other Cedar City agencies took the man into custody and transported him to the Valley View Medical Center for treatment.
The suicide standoff began Wednesday at approximately 5:35 p.m. in Cedar City when deputies were dispatched to 1300 North Iron Springs Road.
“A witness stated the subject had something to his throat and was acting irrational,” Iron County Sheriff’s Sgt. Del Schlosser said in a statement released Wednesday.
Police contained the area by closing off the roads surrounding the street the man was laying in. Police closed Iron Springs Road from approximately 600 North to to 1700 North and some adjacent roads.
The 26-year-old man was found to have a knife and was also advancing on officers and threatening them. Deputies tried to de-escalate the situation and and called in a negotiator who talked with the subject for two hours. K-9’s were deployed along with other less lethal options. The subject was then taken into custody and transported to Valley View Medical Center for treatment.
The police did not go into detail concerning how the man was detained before being transported.
It was also discovered after the incident that a home in the area had been damaged by the subject, Schlosser said.
Charges are still pending as an active criminal investigation into the incident continues.

Kudos to the Cedar City police for not just shooting this guy, as so often happens in other similar situations.
Personally, I hope the K-9 had a very satisfying snack before this fool was taken to the hospital. Might give a whole new meaning to the old commercial “LOVE AT FIRST BITE!” 😀
Shame on you evil twin! Shame! We don’t know what’s driven this guy to do this so let us not rush to judgment. I’m praying it’s not my son. I’m very very grateful that the cops there are not as trigger happy as elsewhere. It shows to me that they have more compassion to the person in question.
