SALT LAKE CITY – Sen. Orrin Hatch blasted the Obama Administration yesterday for announcing it will, for the first time ever, regulate emissions from all new power plants.
The Environmental Protection Agency regulation announced Friday is the first from the Obama Administration’s Global Climate Change Initiative targeting the energy industry, one of the brightest areas in America’s sluggish economy, with costs passed onto every single American through higher energy costs. Future Global Climate Change Initiative regulations are expected to target existing power plants. Hatch said:
Time and again, when the President has had the chance to lead the way on American energy production – whether that be the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline or opening up more federal lands for energy development – he’s chosen his environmentalist allies over the American people. Low energy costs are important to ensure that good manufacturing jobs stay in America, and make no mistake, today’s announcement means higher energy costs for Utahns and Americans across the country. The President may feel this ‘War on Coal’ plays well with his political base, but in reality it’s the American people who will suffer the effects of these back-door energy taxes through higher energy costs.
Almost half of the electricity produced in the U.S. currently comes from coal-fired power plants. The rule announced Friday will require new coal-fired power plants to use carbon capture and sequestration technology to limit carbon emissions – technology which is very limited and will not work in many parts of the country. If power plants fail to meet the strict emission caps set by the Obama Administration they will be required to pay a fine, which will undoubtedly be passed along to consumers.

Time and again, when the Senator Hatch has had the chance to lead the way on American energy production, he has chosen to look out for the likes of the Koch brothers, over the American public.
The Senator may feel his “play on words” plays well with HIS political base, but in reality it’s the American people who will suffer the effects of the back-stabbing tax relief for his wealthy campaign funders while he does everything he can to deny affordable health insurance and minimum wages to those who work for those same rich environment polluting campaign funders.
No, he is looking out for himself. Gramps needs to retire….however the people who listen to the talking rocks keep putting him back in office.
Grandpa sure spends a lot of time being “outraged.” He should take it out on the kids who are trampling his lawn instead of the rest of us.
America’s been feeding at the coal trough too long and getting cheap energy that can be wasted. Yes, we need energy to run and fuel this country, but we don’t need to waste it. We need to get on board with a new clean future, not more of the same old, same old. Winston Churchill changed Britain from coal to oil virtually overnight and it worked for them. Yes, it was wartime and that perhaps made a big difference in being able to convert, but perhaps what we’re in now is a war for our future. I am pleased to see that solar is taking hold in many places by individuals and by businesses who are not letting this nation’s leaders like Hatch hold back them future. Perhaps our coal resources should be our nation’s savings account – save it and use it in the future if we absolutely need it not to just fritter it away while our world’s temp increases and the effects of that are felt by many. Funny that Hatch and others worry about our nation needing coal for energy and are afraid of the negative financial impacts of not having it available for a song but don’t seem too concerned about the costs of the devastation wreaked by Sandy and other extreme events in our country.
Maybe the headline should read “Hatch wants the nation to continue breathing dirty air.”
Disappointing that instead of a news site writing an actual article on something, they just post a press release written by a politician’s media crew and trot it out as news. Kinda like an ‘article’ on a restaurant that’s actually a paid advertisement…
