SOUTHERN UTAH – The National Weather Service has issued a “Wind Advisory” in effect from noon to midnight Tuesday in the southwest, west central and northwestern deserts of Utah.

Conditions

An approaching cold front will push through Nevada on Tuesday before entering northwest Utah Tuesday evening. Southerly winds will increase ahead of this front as a result, becoming strong during the afternoon and continuing into the evening across the western valleys.  This front will cross the area later Tuesday evening into the overnight hours, switching winds to strong and gusty northwest winds for a brief time before diminishing late night.

Areas affected

Salt Lake and Tooele valleys, southern Wasatch front, Great Salt Lake desert and mountains, west central and southwest Utah, including the following cities: Salt Lake City, Tooele, Lehi, Provo, Nephi, Wendover, Snowville, Delta, Fillmore, Beaver, Cedar City and Milford.

Timing

Southerly winds will become strong Tuesday afternoon continuing into the evening. Passage of the cold front will switch winds to a strong northwest briefly before dissipating.

Impacts

Strong crosswinds will make travel difficult on east-west oriented roads, including without limitation, Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 6 and state route 21. Blowing dust is expected and may reduce visibility to under one statute mile in localized areas in west central and northwestern Utah.

Winds

South winds 25-35 mph with gusts in excess of 45 mph in the afternoon and evening, switching to the northwest 25-35 mph with gusts in excess of 45 mph late evening into the overnight.

Precautionary/Preparedness actions

A “Wind Advisory” means that sustained wind speeds of at least 31 mph or gusts of 45 mph are expected.

Motorists in the advisory area should be prepared for sudden gusty crosswinds which can make driving difficult.
