CEDAR CITY – On Tuesday, a Cedar City man bicycling was seriously injured when he collided with a flatbed cargo truck, which had pulled out in front of him. This bicycle accident occurred on the same day that a Washington City cyclist was killed after being struck by a vehicle in St. George.
Cedar City Police Sgt. Jimmy Roden said that 19-year-old Parker Chappell was riding eastward on West University Boulevard near the Eccles Coliseum, when the flatbed, heading south on 1150 West, pulled out in front of his path. Chappell was unable to stop and collided with the truck.
The cyclist was transported by ambulance to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City, and from there he was flown to University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Sgt. Roden was unable to provide details about the nature and severity of Chappell’s injuries, or his current condition.

I worry about these cyclists on the roads around here. I know they have as much right to use the roads as the cars, but it has proven to be so dangerous for the people on the bikes! I hate seeing them out on old highway 91 to Beaver Dam.
I wonder how many of those aggressive motorists on Hwy 18 and Hwy 91 are cheering the news of these two cyclists being struck?

The intersection where this occured is so busy. There should be a light put in there to help with the flow of traffic. So many students on foot and bicycle.
The Delivery Truck was 3/4 the way thru the second crosswalk while driving straight thru the intersection. The bicyclist should have seen this massive truck crossing, and slowed down to avoid the collision. I’m not placing blame, but it is unfair for the driver of this truck to be totally liable.
Maybe he should have seen the truck however pedestrians have the right of way and that’s why the truck driver is to blame.
Bicycles are vehicles, not pedestrians, and therefore subject to the same rules as a motor vehicle. He still would have had the right of way, and the truck is still at fault.
