WASHINGTON COUNTY  –  The National Weather Service has issued a Dry Wash and Stream Advisory for northern Washington County and southwestern Iron County. This advisory is in addition to the Flash Flood Warning issued earlier for parts of Washington and Kane Counties.

The NWS Doppler Radar indicated an area of heavy rain across portions of southwestern Utah at 7:32 p.m., with heavy rainfall in southwestern Iron County spreading into Washington Clounty. This rainfall is expected to continue working south and west through 9 p.m. Water will be flowing through normally dry washes and could flow across local roadways impacting travel.

Roads affected include state Route 56 west of Cedar City and state Route 18 from Enterprise to Veyo.

In addition, washes coming out of Zion National Park will likely be flowing as well, including Dry Creek, LaVerkin Creek and North Creek.

• Precautionary and preparedness actions: A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding.  Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. Most flood deaths occur in automobiles.

• Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road.
• Do not hike rivers and especially slot canyons while flash flood warnings are in place.
• Do not hike alone and always tell someone where you and your buddy and others are going.
