MINERSVILLE – The Black Mountain Fire has reached over 4,500 acres and is 30 percent contained as of Thursday afternoon. Approximately 270 people are involved in fighting the fire and air tankers are laying down retardant lines to support the people on the ground. Thunderstorms are also reportedly building in the fire area, increasing wind conditions and the chance of precipitation with lightning.
The fire has grown by 3,500 acres since 5 p.m., Wednesday, and has crossed from Beaver County into Iron County. Smoke and ash from the blaze began to impact the Cedar City area Wednesday evening,
Located 3 miles east of Minersville, the fire started at 3 p.m., Tuesday, and is believed to be lightning-caused.
All unpaved roads in the area have been closed to public access. Specific closures include the Chalk Hollow, Maple Springs, Black Mountain and Camel Hollow roads.
One cabin remains threatened by the fire. However, no evacuations have been issued, and no structures have been lost.
Two firefighters were transported to the hospital Wednesday for dehydration and heat exhaustion. They are both expected to make a full recovery.
