ST. GEORGE – A new charity created by bikers for bikers, the Utah Downed Biker Fund has already impacted the lives of five local families and will hold a benefit ride this weekend.
A chapter of Bikers for Christ, the Utah Downed Biker Fund was launched in early 2013 with the express purpose of assisting the families of local bikers in need. Following an accident or other tragic occurrence, the fund donates $300 to help with immediate expenses. Since March, the fund has donated to Steve Zohner, Steve Smith and Tim Broderick of St. George and Pamela Page of Washington City.
“The Utah Downed Biker Fund is bikers helping bikers involved in a motorcycle accident requiring hospitalization through a one-time financial gift, counseling and other assistance, regardless of race, color, affiliation or club affiliation,” member Roxanne Leonard said.
“We’re there to help in any way we can,” member Darryl Wolcott said. “If you’re a biker, it’s something you may need. Any of us might get in an accident at any time. We’re reaching out and helping in a time of need.”
On Saturday, the Utah Downed Biker Fund will hold their first fundraising benefit ride at Zion Harley-Davidson. Registration, during which a Dutch Oven breakfast will be served, opens at 9 a.m. The ride begins at 10:30 a.m. Participants will ride from Zion Harley-Davidson to Vernon Worthen Park for lunch, a raffle drawing and live entertainment.
Registration, which includes two drawing tickets, breakfast and lunch, costs $20. All money raised at this event will go directly to assist fund recipients.
