ST. GEORGE – A tire blowout at mile marker 3 caused a northbound dump truck to go sliding across the median of Interstate 15 and into southbound traffic early Monday afternoon.
Although no other vehicles were involved, the truck did cross over the median and headed into opposing traffic, Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said; fortunately, the driver, an adult woman, did not collide with any other vehicles.
“Keep plenty of distance around any large vehicle,” Johnson said. “They can’t see you when you’re close.”
With limited visibility and often substantial payloads, commercial trucks require more space to maneuver and longer distance to safely come to a stop.
“In case something does happen,” Johnson said, “it’s best to be as far away from them as possible and allow yourself an escape route.”
No injuries were reported and no citations given.
Ed. note June 4: According to an email to St. George News from Shannon Nielsen, the driver of the dump truck was her mother, Marianne Taylor of St George.
