ST. GEORGE – The playoffs weren’t kind to the Region 9 teams that made it, with no southern Utah teams making it to championship Saturday. But that doesn’t mean the post-season can’t still be a success for six local girls who made the 3A All-Star team.
Brytni Gurney, McKenzee Langston, Kirsten Anderson, Keltee Shelley, Kensii Redd and Savanah Eckhardt will participate in the 3A vs. 2A All-Star Game today at 3 p.m. at the Cottonwood Complex in Holladay.
Gurney, who has signed to play college softball at the College of Southern Idaho, won 22 games for the Lady Warriors in leading them to the region title. She also had eight extra-base hits, including two home runs.
Langston, also a Snow Canyon graduate, had four home runs and four doubles in helping the Warriors to a 22-2 record. She also played a solid first base for SC.
Anderson, who has signed to play at Salt Lake Community College where she’ll likely revert to her natural position of shortstop, went 16-5 for Pine View and hit eight doubles. Shelley also played for Pine View and was one of the premier power hitters in the state. She socked nine home runs and six doubles this season. The Lady Panthers finished 22-6 and won four playoff games.
Redd and Eckhardt were a big part of the second-place region finish for Canyon View. Redd had 10 extra-base hits, while Eckhardt contributed despite battling nagging injuries all season.
Bear River’s Calvin Bingham and Stansbury’s Bridgett Clinton will be coaching the 3A stars as they battle the 2A All-Stars in the 3 p.m. game. The contest is for seniors (recently graduated) only.
