Red Cross needs additional blood donors throughout summer

ST. GEORGE – It’s nearly time for summer, filled with vacations, pool parties, barbeques, picnics, family gatherings and seemingly endless days of fun. But some will spend this summer in a hospital bed, waiting on a much-needed blood donation.

Each day, the American Red Cross needs 17,000 blood and platelet donations to meet the needs of patients at approximately 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country. While the need for blood never goes away, donors do, especially during the summer months. About two fewer donors give blood at each Red Cross blood drive in June, July and August, which may add up to over 100,000 fewer donations over the summer.

The Red Cross needs your help to remind blood and platelet donors in Utah how much patients need them this summer. If you can help convince just two or more eligible donors to give blood at every blood drive in your area this summer, patients will be better assured to have critically needed blood and platelets available to them. Together, the Red Cross and communities across Utah can help save lives.

The American Red Cross of St. George can be reached at 435-674-4440. Facts about blood donation, a schedule of upcoming blood drives and more information can be found on the Red Cross website.
