ST. GEORGE – For the last couple of football season, it was not uncommon to see Hurricane’s Adam Thompson breaking off long runs that only ended when he was in the opponents’ end zones.
That’s because once Thompson got into the open field no one could catch him. Thompson, a senior, is spending the spring season proving how fast he really is, winning the 100-meter sprint over and over again.
His latest conquest came at the Desert Hills Invitational, an 11-team event that took place over the weekend. And while Thompson continued to dominate, it was Desert Hills that overwhelmed the field in the boys team category. The Thunder were 30 points better than second-place Westlake and 73 points better than the closest Region 9 team, Dixie.
Desert Hills won six individual events to pave the way for the team victory. Brad Wulfenstein was spectacular in taking both hurdles events, the 110 and the 300. Chandler Swaney won the long jump, Blake Kvarfordt took the shot put, Lavala Tumanuvau won the discus and Lau Tumanuvau finished on top in the javelin.
Other region 9 winners were Scott Callister of Canyon View in the 400 and the Dixie 4 X 400 relay team.
On the girls side, Cedar’s girls team continues to dominate. They won the team title by 30 points and had the winner in five events.
Kayla Shakespeare led the way with victories in the 100 and 200-meters. Teammate Aimee Bryson won the 1,600 and the Cedar relay teams took first in the 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 races.
Other region 9 winners on the girls side include, Desert Hills’ Alexa Goulding in the 110 hurdles, Dixie’s Shalynne Seegmiller in the 300-hurdles, DH’s Abby Taylor in the long jump, Pine View’s Jodi Aitui in both the shot put and discus, the Thunder’s Megan Hansen in the javelin and the Pine View relay team in the sprint medley.

Kudos to the Desert Hills baseball team, which moved to 7-0 in region play. The Thunder were a little worried about Friday’s game at Cedar. It took a walk-off hit to barely edge the Redmen in St. George earlier this season. But this time DH had no problem, rushing out to a 9-0 lead before giving up a couple of late runs to Cedar. Desert Hills now has a two-game lead on Snow Canyon with five games left. The two teams play Apr. 26.
And while the Thunder remain undefeated, Snow Canyon (5-2 in region) seems to have awakened from a sleep-walk and is playing some incredible baseball. The Warriors outscored Dixie and Pine View by a combined 25-0 since that 5-4 loss to the Thunder.
Dixie got a couple of huge wins this week and went from fifth to third in the baseball standings.
The final playoff spot may come down to a battle between the two Cedar schools, unless Pine View or Hurricane get hot. Canyon View (3-3) is a half game ahead of Cedar (3-4). Hurricane and Pine View are both 1-6.
On a side note, congrats to freshman Dakota Donovan of Pine View, who struck out 17 Cedar batters, but watched his team lose in extra innings to the Redmen, 4-3. The lanky right-hander has also been hitting the ball pretty well and the sky may well be the limit for him.
In softball, you can’t quite start engraving that Region 9 championship trophy yet, but it’s getting close. In fact, Snow Canyon could all-but-clinch Tuesday afternoon when the Lady Warriors (7-0 in region) play host to the Canyon View Lady Falcons (5-2). If SC wins that one, the Warriors would be three games ahead with four game left.
It’s also a special day at Snow Canyon as the softball team will be wearing pink to honor pitcher Brytni Gurney’s mother, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The pink uniforms also serve to remind all of us that we still haven’t beaten cancer and to raise awareness of the need for a cure.
The Lady Warriors, of course, are still perfect at 14 on the season, having beaten one contender after another. SC beat Pine View 7-0 Friday evening. The Lady Panthers are 4-3 and in third place while 3-3 Cedar is fourth. Hurricane still has a shot at the playoffs at 3-4 as does 2-5 Dixie.
Soccer has turned into a three-team race for the region title as well as a three-team race for the fourth and final playoff spot.
Atop region 9, Dixie, Desert Hills and Pine View all have 18 points. The Thunder and Flyers have four games left while Pine view has three region games remaining. Dixie and Desert Hills split their season series, each taking one win. Pine View still plays both teams one more time. The Panthers beat Desert Hills earlier this year and lost to Dixie.
Meanwhile, the fourth (Snow Canyon), fifth (Cedar) and sixth (Hurricane) place teams are separated by three points. The Warriors have the inside track with 13 points. Cedar is close with 12 and Hurricane is hanging in there with 10 points. A lot will be decided Friday when SC and Cedar play at Warriors Stadium.
