SALT LAKE CITY – Two new temples were announced during the morning session of the general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Church president Thomas S. Monson said one temple will be built in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the other in Cedar City.
Church members consider temples to be the “house of the Lord,” the most sacred places on earth. Unlike meetinghouses, where Sabbath worship and weekly activities take place, temples are open throughout the week and closed on Sundays.
The Cedar City Temple will be the 17th built in Utah.
According to a press release, the church believes that temple attendance strengthens it members in their efforts to follow Jesus Christ. In the temple, “sacred ceremonies connect families forever and explain God’s plan for His children.”
These “sacred ceremonies” include the practice of temple/eternal marriage and baptisms for the dead.
In order to attend the temple, church members must be able to pass two separate interviews with church officials who establish they are “in good standing,” before being issued a temple recommend that must be displayed at the entrance of any temple before being allowed to enter.
There are currently 141 operating temples worldwide and, with today’s announcement, 29 temples announced under construction.
The exact locations of the new temples will be announced at a later date.

I can’t wait for the Parowan temple. The Enoch temple should be a nice addition as well. Maybe Hildale will get a temple when polygamy becomes legal right behind gay marriage.

I’m not LDS. I see all the hypocrisy here that you all see. But it is no different here, than anywhere else. Any of you ever live in a predominantly Roman Catholic community? Talk about a business being run on a “tax exempt” basis?
Hey, building the temple will bring some construction jobs to the area, if nothing else. It will also bring some more, maybe a lot, maybe not, tourists to the area. Tourists support motels, restaurants and the like, which is good for the economy.
You folks need to learn to look past your hatred and fear, and think about the positive aspects of this.

Oh god, just what Utah needs. Glad the church is rolling in dough so much that even tiny towns are getting these temples while the real world is in recession. I’ma go have me a beer!

Glad to see a temple in Ceder. Now those people in the surrounding are won’t have to drive hours to go too the temple. Being from Alaska its nice to see temples in places people thought would never get one.
