LDS temple announced for Cedar City

SALT LAKE CITY – Two new temples were announced during the morning session of the general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Church president Thomas S. Monson said one temple will be built in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the other in Cedar City.

Church members consider temples to be the “house of the Lord,” the most sacred places on earth. Unlike meetinghouses, where Sabbath worship and weekly activities take place, temples are open throughout the week and closed on Sundays.

The Cedar City Temple will be the 17th built in Utah.

According to a press release, the church believes that temple attendance strengthens it members in their efforts to follow Jesus Christ. In the temple, “sacred ceremonies connect families forever and explain God’s plan for His children.”

These “sacred ceremonies” include the practice of temple/eternal marriage and baptisms for the dead.

In order to attend the temple, church members must be able to pass two separate interviews with church officials who establish they are “in good standing,” before being issued a temple recommend that must be displayed at the entrance of any temple before being allowed to enter.

There are currently 141 operating temples worldwide and, with today’s announcement, 29 temples announced under construction.

The exact locations of the new temples will be announced at a later date.

You only see things from the outside, but if you were to expand your horizons a bit, you would see much more

      • Tyler April 6, 2013 at 10:52 pm

You’re just brainwashed like the rest of them, jude

  • Snowfield April 6, 2013 at 1:25 pm

Anyone have any idea of the proposed location in town?

  • Nate April 6, 2013 at 5:55 pm

Way to show tolerence to those with differing views than you. I bet you enjoy a peaceful life with such negative rhetoric.

Congratulations to the people in Cedar City whose lives will be blessed by a temple so close.

Cool, so does that mean St George can get rid of its temple so we can have a real-world downtown with loud concerts, bars, nightlife etc.? 😛

  • Seriously Utah? April 6, 2013 at 10:50 pm

Wow, so glad ten percent of my hard-earned paycheck to (barely) support myself doesn’t contribute to these absolute wasteful buildings. 17th in Utah? now that is the most ridiculous thing ever! Religion is just another d… business.

That Monson in the pic looks like the rest of those creepy religious leaders molesting kids! Oh, I just puked in my mouth..

    • Zeke April 7, 2013 at 7:22 am

Oh, and you remind me of the creepy cat lady that lives at the edge of town with 87 cats in the house. None of which have ever been out of the house, ever. (Vomit sounds follow) Really? That’s the best comment you can muster up over news such as this?

      • Barbara April 7, 2013 at 4:36 pm

That’s funny. You don’t even know me let alone see a pic of me, freak

        • Too funny! April 7, 2013 at 5:45 pm

That’s too funny! But we could only imagine what that pic looks like. Meeeoooowww

  • Sister Phillys April 6, 2013 at 11:01 pm

For Heaven’s sake. For Monson’s sake. For Mormons sake this is just absolutely wonderful. Now Cedar can be a part of this amazing, awesome, beautiful, fantatsic, mystical phenomenon of the growing heavenly kingdoms on earth

    • sweet jude April 7, 2013 at 8:57 pm

I sense a lot of bitterness coming from you, why, is it because you left the church on your own volition or did you get excommunicated? What a wonderful place to come and vent your frustrations! The public won’t help much just so you know …

  • Tyler April 7, 2013 at 2:35 am

I can’t wait for the Parowan temple. The Enoch temple should be a nice addition as well. Maybe Hildale will get a temple when polygamy becomes legal right behind gay marriage.

    • Barbara April 7, 2013 at 4:38 pm

So all the hick towns are getting temples now eh? Oh how ridiculous!! Oh well, not my money thank god!

  • Big Don April 7, 2013 at 12:02 pm

Why all the hatred shown here? Hope you all are really proud of yourselves.
I’m not LDS. I see all the hypocrisy here that you all see. But it is no different here, than anywhere else. Any of you ever live in a predominantly Roman Catholic community? Talk about a business being run on a “tax exempt” basis?
Hey, building the temple will bring some construction jobs to the area, if nothing else. It will also bring some more, maybe a lot, maybe not, tourists to the area. Tourists support motels, restaurants and the like, which is good for the economy.
You folks need to learn to look past your hatred and fear, and think about the positive aspects of this.

    • Barbara April 7, 2013 at 4:40 pm

Little Don, you’re missing the point.

      • Big Don April 7, 2013 at 7:52 pm

Well now, “Big Babs,” why don’t YOU enlighten me.

      • sweet jude April 7, 2013 at 8:52 pm

Youre probably one of those excommunicated Mormons who are extremely bitter for being kicked out of the church …

        • Barbara April 8, 2013 at 7:44 pm

ACTUALLY ,dear, I dropped out of the brainwashing cult when I found out Joseph Smith was only 14 when he had this cultish “vision”. I’m learning of soo many people dropping this church like flies as they step outside the box and see the whole picture. Advice to you, seek more knowledge so you can be free and live for yourselves, not your cult

          • sweet jude April 8, 2013 at 8:46 pm

Why the misery and bitterness when you should feel liberated? Either you are skipping over your real issues or you are just plain ignorant and unwilling to adjust.

  • Nate April 8, 2013 at 3:04 pm

All the hate…so sad. I’m really quite surprised there is this type hate here.

    • Big Don April 8, 2013 at 4:18 pm

I know what you mean, Nate. Maybe it is the “Downwind Syndrome,” or maybe it is just in the water here! I believe that hate is bred by ignorance. And unfortunately, there is much ignorance here. Even on the part of some supposedly “educated” individuals.

  • Big @$$ Bob April 8, 2013 at 7:48 pm

Oh god, just what Utah needs. Glad the church is rolling in dough so much that even tiny towns are getting these temples while the real world is in recession. I’ma go have me a beer!

    • Big Don April 9, 2013 at 10:06 am

So you don’t think the building of this temple will help the economy?

  • Joseph Houston April 8, 2013 at 7:54 pm

You hateful commenters should fret Judgement Day, that’s all I know. This is absolutely wonderful for the town of Cedar City and Utah.

  • Whit April 8, 2013 at 8:53 pm

I don’t encourage hatred but don’t try to push your beliefs on me just cause I and others disagree with your beliefs!

    • Big Don April 9, 2013 at 10:07 am

So who is pushing their beliefs on you? Just say no, and move on.

  • Nate April 8, 2013 at 11:27 pm

why even post on an article about LDS Temples? Seriously… if you have nothing good to say, why post? no one makes you believe a certain way, no one makes you read the article. why not just move along? seriously all the foolish haters will one day regret their hateful ways.

  • Tyler April 9, 2013 at 1:51 pm

I am happy that more and more people are learning the truth about the lies their parents taught them as children. For all former Mormons please get your family seer stones for Christmas.

  • casey April 10, 2013 at 9:50 pm

hahaha stupid mormons… surely there is 100 better ways to use the money they are wasting on another temple. oh well. sheep sheep sheep

  • ak July 20, 2014 at 1:09 am

Glad to see a temple in Ceder. Now those people in the surrounding are won’t have to drive hours to go too the temple. Being from Alaska its nice to see temples in places people thought would never get one.
