Softball roundup: Gurney leads Snow Canyon Lady Warriors to eighth straight victory

ST. GEORGE – Brytni Gurney didn’t have her best stuff from the pitcher’s circle Tuesday afternoon. Fortunately for Snow Canyon, she also brought her bat.

Gurney homered, doubled and pitched a complete-game victory as the Snow Canyon Lady Warriors drubbed Pine View 9-4 at SCHS.

“I was nervous early because we got off to such a slow start,” Warriors coach Brandyn Sargent said. “But we got our bats going. Truthfully, it could have 15-4 or more. We left a lot of runners on base.”

The Lady Panthers led 2-1 going into the bottom of the third inning and were riding the hot arm of ace pitcher Kirsten Anderson. But a rally, sparked by Gurney, Sonya Hardy and Skyler Gates brought home four runs in the bottom of the third and turned the game round.

“I settled down after that because I knew our bats had arrived,” Sargent said.

Snow Canyon added two more runs in the fifth to make it 7-2. Pine View pulled to within 7-4 in the top of the sixth, but again the Lady Warriors answered with two more of their own, pushing the lead to 9-4. Gurney shut Pine View down in the seventh to record the win.

It was supposed to be a defensive battle between to hot pitchers, but it was the hitters that ruled the day.

“I was a little surprised that it was so high scoring,” Sargent said. “Pine View beat us twice last year, so I was pretty stressed when they got ahead early on. But we hit the ball hard all game. That helped.”

The two teams came into the region-opener with identical 7-0 preseason records. But Snow Canyon proved to be the team to beat with 13 hits. Pine View had five hits and three errors.

The Lady Warriors, 8-0 and 1-0 in region, play at Canyon View Friday. SC has scored at least eight runs in its last eight games.

Pine View, 7-1 and 0-1, is home to face Hurricane Friday. Elaine Asaasa homered for PV.

Hurricane 4, Dixie 3

The Lady Tigers scored two in the sixth and two more in the seventh to capture the come from behind victory. Paisley Pearson got the win for Hurricane, which smacked 12 hits and committed just two errors.

The Lady Tigers, 3-1 overall and 1-0 in region, got a double from Lexi Fancy and play at Pine View Friday.

The Lady Flyers dropped to 7-3 overall and 0-1 in region play. Dixie broke the scoreless tie with three runs off of Pearson in the top of the fifth inning. But pitcher Krista DeKorver couldn’t hold the lead and the Dixie defense committed six errors.

Aubri Challis had a double for the Lady Flyers, who play at home vs. Desert Hills Friday.
