ST. GEORGE – Amid the raindrops and puddles Friday, there were some baseball games played in southern Utah. The Dixie Flyers started their 2013 baseball campaign with a big splash, whipping Tooele 10-0 Friday afternoon at Don Lay Flyer Field.

“It was a good way to start the season,” Dixie coach Danny Ipson said. “The guys played well for the first game out.”

The duo of Anthony Bauman and Taylor Riggs shut out the Buffaloes while allowing just a single hit. Bauman was nearly perfect in his four innings of work, not giving up a single hit. Riggs pitched a scoreless fifth inning to close things out.

Offensively, Dixie provided Bauman and Riggs with plenty of support. The Flyers pounded out 11 hits. Tyler Strehlow, Tanner Wilde, Braxton Ipson and Tanner Webster had two base knocks each. Strehlow, Wilde, Ipson and Bauman all doubled while Webster had a triple.

Despite the weather, six of the eight games were played on the first day of the Donnie Pymm/Pizza Hut Classic. The results: Salem Hills beat Cerdar 1-0; Stansbury beat Carbon 7-2; Wasatch beat Bear River 2-1; Salem Hills beat Carbon 1-0, and Stansbury beat Cedar 3-2.

The 7 p.m. games at Flyer and Elks Fields were washed out and re-scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday. So, the Saturday schedule for the Pymm/Pizza Hut Classic is as follows:

10 a.m. – Bear River vs. Dixie (Flyer Field)
10 a.m. – Wasatch vs. Tooele (Elks Field)
1 p.m. – Cedar vs. Carbon (Flyer Field)
1 p.m. – Stansbury vs. Salem Hills (Elks Field)
4 p.m. – Dixie vs. Wasatch (Flyer Field)
4 p.m. – Bear River vs. Tooele (Elks Field)
7 p.m. – Weather permitting, winners of pool play and runners up will square off.

Pine View, Desert Hills and Snow Canyon all hosted tournaments Friday with varying success in completing games due to the weather. Here are the results we were able to obtain:

Pine View, under the tutelage of new head coach Mike Gargano, got just two innings in against Pleasant Grove at Bruce Hurst Field. The Panthers led 5-3 in a game that will be resumed Saturday morning at Pine View High School. The Panthers are also scheduled to play Lone Peak at 1:30 p.m.

Snow Canyon dropped a Thursday night game vs. Cimarron Memorial, 3-1, but came back to capture a win Saturday. The Warriors play Foothill (Nev.) Saturday at 1 p.m. at Warriors Field. A win would put them in the championship game Saturday night in a probable rematch with Cimarron. We will update with more info from Snow Canyon as it becomes available.

Hurricane opened the season with a 7-7 tie against Moapa Valley Thursday afternoon in a time-limit game, but the Tigers couldn’t get any games in at soggy Mesquite, Nev. Friday.

Late Friday evening Desert Hills knocked off Maple Mountain 8-6. Dylan File got the win in the see saw game. Baden Powell came in late and picked up the save for the 2-0 Thunder.

Down 4-2, Blake Betts tied the game with a two-run gapper in the fifth inning. File then helped himself out with a two-run double in the sixth that would give the Thunder a 6-4 lead. DH would add two more runs to take an 8-4 advantage into the final inning. The Eagles scored twice to cut into the lead, but Powell came in and shut the door.

The Golden Eagles came into the game ranked No. 1 in the state in 4A. “It was a big win for us,” DH coach Jerry Beck said.

The Thunder play at 1 p.m. Saturday vs. Timpanogas. A win will put them in the championship game at 7 p.m. at Desert Hills.
